Blue Thunderbirds?

Im new to all this CPU stuff and I was wondering whats special about the blue Thunderbirds? Which is better for overclocking, the blue or other kind? Thanks.

(BTW I would be purchasing a 900 Mhz, wheres the best and most reliable place to buy one? Any other recommendations for online retailers would help.)
 
the blue core on the tbirds means they were fabricated in the dresden plant. amd uses them in their 1ghz+ machines because they can handle the higher clock speeds better than the green. if i remember correctly and haven't switched them, then the blue ones are copper and the green ones are aluminum. the aluminum ones are found in all cores up to and including some 1ghz chips. the blue ones tend to overclock better than the green.

i live in california, and i've found a great online retailer that has very competitive prices, decent shipping prices and an awesome selection. i've never had a problem with their orders, but every time i've had a question, they answered it promptly. they're at AllStarShop.com and their ResellerRating is very good too.
 
I'll second that vote for Allstar as a good online retailer. I've dealt with them 4 times and have never had a problem.
 
Just checked their prices...omygosh! $350 for a *boxed* CPU you can get for $220 on Buy.com?? I guess premium service comes at a premium price...

I purchased a 900 T-bird from BUYCOM wk 41 and it is al(not Dresdon or blue). It does 1020 @1.8v. So, pot luck from Buycom on blue, although alot of the 900 will do 1gig

Same thing, got aluminum Tbird900 from Buy.com, just resold on Egay. Now I'll have to buy a 1.1+ TBird but at least it'll definitely be blue.
 
TCWO has good prices on TBIRDS and they are very reliable. Plus you get to deal with JonnyG if you have problems 😛
 
I swear I thought I read somewhere that AMD had not switched over to a copper core yet because they realized they wouldn't get any gains by switching, and are waiting for their next chip to switch. Maybe I'm smoking crack, but I thought I read that it was just a rumor about different types of cores. Maybe I'm wrong, I'll try to remember where I read that and if I can find it, I'll come back and post it.
 
Leo V: ...so don't buy a boxed one. the $219 chip on pricewatch certainly isn't a retail chip. anyway, i didn't buy my chip from them, so i didn't know their cpu prices. it is high, their price might be $100 more than the lowest on pricewatch, but they are a trusted retailer. all the other stuff that i've bought from them (dvd, floppy, burner) were only $20 or so more than the lowest on pricewatch, adn i think that is fine because i know that i'm going to get good service. from all the horror stories i've read on this forum and on resellerratings, i've vowed only to buy from a trusted retailer from now on.
