Blue Screen w/XP Pro Need Help

No hardware changes have been done. System running fine for several years until today.

It needed a good cleaning which it got. I ran Memtest and HD diagnostic (quick test) with no problems. The intake was clogged badly with pet hair, so I chalked it up to overheating.

Sytem booted fine for me, was responding crisply but on one boot I had no mouse or keyboard response. I have a spare mobo and swapped it. Processor looks fine and temps look fine in BIOS.

All looked well and I was downloading some Windows updates and it blue screened. From what I saw, it appears to be identical to the screen from the original complaint (which I did not see in person).

Pic is linked. This type of error is beyond my diagnostic abilities. I need some help with this one.

Ntfs.sys I believe is related to your file System.

Sounds like it could be Hard Drive corruption.

If you get it back up, try to run Diskscan on it - it may be able to recover things for you.

Another option would be to do a reformat/re-install of XP.

If it turns out to be a definite Hardware issue I'd look at Hard Drive or PSU (especially if it's old).

 
I think you nailed it. I decided to clone the HD to a spare HD to cover myself in case of some bad ju-ju, and during the copy the source drive started doing the scritch, scritch, scritch noise.

I'm working on it now. (Fingers are crossed)

 
definately hard drive corruption... could be the fault of the HD, but more likely the fault of windows (I had the same error once, but it never showed up again).

What I would recommend is defragging your mbr.
 
I just popped it out of the freezer and am trying to clone it. If that doesn't work, I'm going to see if I can image it.

It was making some noises, but it's a third of the way through it which is way further than it's gotten prior.

If I can't clone or image, chkdsk /r it is. Nothing really to lose.

It's for a work environment. All the data is stored on a server so it's just a matter of rebuilding the OS and apps. Although I'd like to clone it to make my life easier.

Edit: This was the first time I ever used the freezer trick and it worked! 😀
