I keep getting the same blue screen error. It is "VXD VMM(01)". I got it when rebooting after installing DirectX 8 and then also, I get it every time I try to play Counter Strike. My system:

900 T-Bird
Asus A7V
128meg RAM
2 - 20gig IBM drives(one on the ATA/66 and the other on the 100 contoller)
32meg DDR GeForce2 GTS w/ Det3 drivers
D-Link Net card
Sound Blaster Live X-Gamer

I was wondering if anyone could help me with some suggestions as to what might be wrong.
thanks,
-doug

Usually defective memory. Try testing memory:

1. Add/Edit the following command to config.sys

device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:eek:N

This would force windows to test the memory used by himem. If some trouble appears here you could have a bad memory chip.

There are MANY other VMM errors possible.

you say this started after DX 8.0? Why did you even install 8.0? Are you using the 7.xx Det. drivers?

It is the same memory I was using in my last system and I had no problems with it. Im not sure why Im using direct x 8, would direct x 7 fix the problem? I had the same problem just a few minutes ago when trying to install MS office. Any more ideas?
thanks,

Possibly a stupid question, but how do I uninstall DirectX? Also, here is another question, can excessive heat cause blue screens?
thanks,

you can find DX8 uninstall programs pretty much anywhere
I remember reading a posting on Blues News about it. Do a search on there.

More likely the problem is your RAM...just because it worked in your last system doesn't mean it will get along fine with the new motherboard and CPU. Especially if you're switching between Intel and AMD.

Another thing to look for is possible IRQ conflicts between devices. Like between your netcard and your soundcard. That will cause freezes and blue screens.

Does this only happen with Counter Strike? Or are there other ways you can reproduce the problem? If its just counter-strike try reinstalling it.

Finally the last thing I can suggest is maybe a problem with moving your drives between two different controllers. This is unlikely, but possible.

I'm sure its one of these problems, so just try everything until you isolate it.

Already did that, still getting blue screened. Should I install them again? This board really isnt wowing me right now. I have no doubt that once I get it working I'll like it, but I need to get it working.

One particular blue screen comes when Im playing Hitman. I get a blue screen and one .wav from the game keeps playing over and over. Does this sound like a sound card problem? Any possible solutions?

Here's another one for ya - still playing Hitman, and the computer just shuts off and restarts. Is this a power supply thing? I have an Antec 300W power supply, should I get a bigger one? Are all of these problems power related perhaps?
thanks,
-doug
PS: A little more on my 2 HDs, one is 5400RPM, one is 7200RPM, if that changes anything.

Sounds like a video driver problem. After installing the Via 4in1, reinstall the video driver. Also try setting the ram to cas 3, if this doesn't help , Maybe a o/s reinstall will fix all.

Ok, I will reinstall my video drivers. Turning RAM to CAS3, never thought of that. I might give that a shot. As for reinstalling OS, I have reinstalled windows so many times I have memorized my registration code..K4HVD-..oh sorry:D
thanks,

Here is yet another one. Im now having random lockups. Just using IE, it is locking up pretty regularly. Does that sound like a heat issue?

Try scanning your computer with OptOut, if you're getting a lot of IE lockups, it could be spyware.

Q9TJ9-6CRX9-C9G68...

could go on :)

Grrr...I have a lot of wasted brain space...I think I have 2 or so Win95B serials, 2 Win98SE serials, 1 Win98FE serial, 1 Win2k serial, all stuck in my head...I don't have a WinME serial memorized yet, which is a good sign, I'm probably not fond of it :)

Spout off all 25 fast and impress the ladies...yeah right ;)
Save natural log for that one...just use the twenty dollar trick...
2.7 1828 1828(year jackson was elected. twice though, since he was elected twice) now fold a corner of the 20 dollar bill into an isosceles triangle, what are the angles? 45 90 45...subtract 2 from each of the last two, digits, 23... add 3 to those two digits...56

2.7182818284590452356

Tada, 20 digits of natural log, impressive? ;)

open up device manager and check for shared IRQs...your repeating WAV file makes me think of that as a culprit
Make sure that you're not sharing any IRQs between your sound card and anything else.

If there's none, then its gotta be your memory. I'd suggest trying to find a friend's computer and swapping your ram with his to see if his causes the same problems. Try that before you buy more.

I dont really have a friend I can swap RAM with unfortunatly. I guess Im going to have to get more. I just really want to exhaust all other options before I buy more RAM. I installed the latest 4in1 drivers and took out directx 8 and put in 7. Im going to give this all a shot now and see what happens.

Im really getting tired of this whole mess. I reinstalled my sound card drivers because something got messed up with directX. And I get about 5 blue screens and 2 full out lockups before I can get back into windows. First reboot, it does its little "updating sytem such and such" and i get blue screened half way through, something thing, VXD VMM on (06) this time instead of (01). So I restart, starts doing the update thing again, more blue screens, not the VMM one but another one just the same, so I reboot again, get like 5 blue screens before I even get into windows. I mean, what the hell is going on!? Im trying to decide who to call first, mwave(where I bought it), Asus, or Via. Any thoughts? I really need to get this whole situation straightened out. I have reinstalled windows so many times, reinstalled drivers...everything I can think of. Does anyone have any more thoughts on this?
thanks,
-doug
PS: To everyone who has helped me so far, thanks so much. Please keep posting ideas, this has to be fixable some way.

sorry i wasnt able to get on this thread any earlier, just noticed it.
i had a similar problem that you commented on in your first post
i am happy to see that you listed an ide controller card as an additional accessory to your box
to correct the problem i had, i removed the ide controller. i now have no problems.

western digital 30.7gig ata-66 7200rpm was my c:
and on the siig ata-33 controller were two old maxtor ata-33 7gig 5400rpm

my motherboard is an asus k7v and my video card a geforce 2mx. not the same as you but those are the only two similar devices i have beyond the controller.

if this doesnt work make sure each device has its own irq number like some people said
