Blue screen error...

hey

I have an error popping often enough to get very annoying. just seeing if the experienced out there can shed light...

it is Machine_check_exception..

0x0000009C (0x00000003 0x8054DA70 0xFE000000 0X00200100)

as i understand it from hunting about this is an error reported to windows direct from the CPU reg. a hardware fault. The other numbers seem to be a code dependant on the cpu... I've not managed to find the code anywhere but as i understand it this type of error code is not very informative..

So i have a 2.4 c p4 which has been clocked to 3.6 on a vaporchill rig.. my mem volts are maxed out for the board 1c7 max II 2.8 i think, on corsair bh5 , runs at 200mhz 2 2 2 5 normaly it's been running this way fine for 1.5 years.... the vapo chill is powered from a sepparate PSU.

I think the problem first became frequent ish when i added a 6800 se graphics card, but i'm not certain, and i just added a dvd burner which seems to have tipped it to the point where it will blue screen repeatedly. So i was thinking it maybe the psu..

it's not the best psu ever.. 500W CWT channel well technology?

3.3v 32A 5v 42A 12v 24A

it doesn't drive the vaporchill so i figured it was enough....

but the odd thing is this only ever happens on the desktop normaly when web browsing or email that kind of thing.. I can play games for hours and it doesn't happen.

Also when i go back to stock speeds. no blue screens, but i didn't buy a vaporchill to run at stock speeds! if the chips had it i'll buy another..

So what do you think CPU getting old ? Power supply? but y doesn't it happen in games ?

thanks !

here's what microsoft has to say..

A machine check exception occurs when Windows XP and your hardware platform cannot recover from a hardware error so that the system can continue to run successfully and reliably. More specific diagnosis of machine check exceptions is difficult, and there is no general solution

no general solution! which is y I'm asking you lot..

it does seem like it may be cpu / memory related though.. could it still be power or is my cpu / memory toasted enough to no longer overclock reliably?

thanks again!

ocing your cpu shortens it's life eventually it'll just give up and die. same for the ram. when you continously up the voltage and run it above what it's rated, it will conk out on you.

i did suspect this was the case and i'm not to distraut if something has lived out it's life.. but i need to know what needs replacing.. if it's the cpu i'll buy a new one.. or psu etc...

though as i say at stock i'm having no problems...

Well first I would try to decrease your overclock a bit, just to see if that helps. Have you run memtest to check to make sure the memory isn't having issues? Have you tried putting the old video card back in? Probably would be better to be using a good name brand PSU for doing a major overclock like that..

well, there's a real beefy 680w antec truepower for $199. something like around 100 for a 520w or similar truepower.

tagan has it's share of problems.

If you are going to spend $200 on a PSU go for nothing less than the PCP&C units.

oh yeah OC error..
i got it a couple of times before..rarely though since I checked prime95 to make sure it can sustain without giving a checksum error or etc.. crap error

yeap.. can't deny the effects of OC.
Then again if we upgrade every 2 years or sooner.. its really not something to think about.

they do tend to get VERY expensive though. a good 850w will cost you an arm, leg and most of the side of your face. ($400)
850W, 11lbs, 85% efficiency

similar 700w model casts $300

Can't believe I didnt even notice for 21 posts!

They have models that cost less than $300. In fact they have a Silencer series w/at 410W at $85 and a 470W at $99. If you want to ensure system stability I would go w/a Turbo Cool model which hover around $200, such as the TC Deluxe at $229. They have a proven track record with great quality, efficiency, and customer service. And a five year warranty to boot.
