Blue screen after installing KM2M

Hi. I really badly need some help.

I just bought a new motherboard : MSI KM2M (MS-6738)

http://www.msicomputer.com/pro...M_Combo-L&class=mb

I've connected all the cables fine. I have a 450 W power supply.

My computer starts up fine. BIOS finishes checking everything fine. Then, I get the "Verifying DMI Pool Data...". And then I get a message from Windows saying that the hardware/software environment has been changed since the last time Windows loaded (it should be saying this since I have a new motherboard). It gives me options of 3 different types of Safe Mode (normal, with networking, with the command prompt), the last successful Windows configuration and the normal Windows mode. I select the normal Windows mode and then the screen goes blank for a while. And then a blue screen error flashes and the computer restarts. I can't even give you details about the blue screen error since it flashes really fast.

I even tried reparing Windows with its installation disk but the computer restarts when it is loading all the setup files for Windows.

I have checked my 2 SD-RAM memory slots and they seem to be working fine. I have swapped them in all the various slots and even tried them on their own. It still gives me the same output.

I really really need somebody's help on this.

Try running the cpu at 100 fsb. With some sdram modules, 100 fsb is all the cpu will run at. If you continue to have problems, try pc2700 or pc3200 memory. I get mine from aib.com, and their generic works well for me.

I have already set the FSB to 100 Mhz. Infact, my computer doesn't start at all when I set the jumper setting to 133 Mhz. That is another problem all together in fact!!!! :) But going from what you just said, I guess I now know why setting the jumper to 133 Mhz was causing problems.

What CPU are you using? What else besides the Motherboard did you change. The harddrive you are using had a different configuration stored on it and it sees the difference. Try wiping the drive and reloading your O/S.

Yep. Windows xp or 2k will probably require a format. Someone suggested you rename your windows file, and reload. I've never done that, but if your files are important, you may have to try it. Otherwise, reinstall your old mobo-cpu, and backup your files with norton ghost before formatting.

Besides the "repair install" Windows XP will let you do a "delete install" where the installer deletes the Windows directory and reinstalls fresh, keeping all your data intact since unlike Win95/98/ME user data is not stored in the Windows directory.

If your CPU is supposed to run at 133 and the board won't POST with it set as such, definately you have hardware problems. Besides trying some different (possibly DDR) RAM that o1die suggested, check the CPU temperature. If the HSF isn't seated properly perhaps it is overheating so fast on POST that it can't handle the higher speed, while the lower speed results in instability.

What was the reason you bought the new motherboard? If your old motherboard croaked, perhaps you have other parts that need replacement. Also, it is not unknown for those MSI boards to be faulty.
