Good thing I just refilled my tanks, there's going to be a run on blue rhino tanks at walmart now!

They were lucky the main storage tanks didn't go up, IIRC they said each one hold 50,000 gl liquid propane..

Not as bad as it could have been, since all the tanks they have laying around are underfilled.

I hope there are no deaths from this.

This from a part of the story, "The plant runs in two shifts, and workers on the second shift were on when the blaze ignited. Some of the employees were hired through a staffing agency, which declined to comment."

Nice, another FL Co. trying to "cheap out" on labor costs, for god' sake these people are handling propane, don't you think permanent, trained employees would be preferable?

Doesn't surprise me. I got one of their propane tanks a couple years ago that had a faulty valve, burned up my grill and almost burned my house down in the process.

They sent an investigator out who of course couldn't conclusively determine their tank/valve was at fault, so refused to do anything about it (despite the fact that the fire department told me that was exactly what it was).

Thankfully, the manager at Lowes (where I had gotten the tank) was extremely helpful, said they'd been having tons of problems with Blue Rhino and told me to go pick out a new grill and they'd have it delivered that day.

Damn. I would have been pissed with that investigator. Good to hear you didn't lose your home or life due to their negligence and poor quality. I may need to boycott blue rhino over all of this. I don't want to support people that screw the workers and put them at risk and shirk their responsibilities to their and own safety.

    Definitely not upper management.
    - Temporary workers, so they're working cheap per hour.
    - Temporary workers, so they're not likely to have health insurance or disability insurance through the company, so they're also really cheap in that respect.
    - Staffing agency, so they can be replaced quickly.

Sounds like a darn good deal, at least if you're a psychopath.

There might be issues with OSHA though.

I live in the same county as this plant, hadn't heard about it yet. Scary stuff here.

I suspect it had something to do with the Propane igniting ;)

Why would you (anyone) use Blue Rhino? They underfill the tanks & charge more. You get your money's worth (and for less money) if you just get the tank refilled. Though, I can see where someone might use Blue Rhino as a last resort - e.g., they're cooking, run out of gas, and the refill places are closed. I was stuck doing that this summer. I realized that not only are the tanks lighter, but they "look" nice and clean - that's because they completely spraypaint the tanks when they come in - spraying right over rust, decals, etc.

Totally agree, and I know that now. I always go to my local Uhaul place that fills my tank up for less and it actually gets filled all the way.

Blue Rhino is just a horrible company all the way around
