fembots writes "The Inquirer is running an article detailing how Blu-Ray drives for the Playstation 3 will cost Sony a small fortune. It turns out that at the release of the console in the first half of 2006, Sony will have to pay more than $100 per drive which will dramatically increase the unit cost of the PS3."

I'm sure as time goes on production will be cheaper, and the fact that its blue ray enabled will be a boost for it...I would think they are thinking long term.

All I know is Sony should be hitting price point of Xbox to be competitive (though I heard Sony will keep 49.99 for games, so it might cost more with cheaper games)

If true, that means regular blu players will cost $250-300 to consumers, making the PS3 much more attractive for the cost savings.

Sony loses more per unit up front, but their $400 blu-capable player suddenly seems cheap compared to spending $400 xbox360 with plain DVD plus $250 more for a blu player.

Risky move by Sony.

Well when you are number 1 you got room to do this kind of stuff.

Just as long as they don't do what nintendo did and try to many crappy things and then get owned by the new guys. 🙁

*Goes to look for his virtual boy, err power glove...err*

Granted I loved nintendo but I think they died around the nintendo 64 time area. 🙁

Most of the consoles loose money.

It's games where they make it up.

not just the games. think of the royalties on movies when there are 20 million blu ray players sold in the first year, mostly due to ps3 sales

HD-DVD > Blu Ray

Blu Ray is going to rape you with security protections.

You don't think that HD-DVD will have the same protections? Blu ray is simply better, I can guarantee you that HD-DVD will have the same protections if it takes off. What makes you think a recording style is directly proportional to the fact it requires you to connect to the intarweb for authentication? I don't think sony will force me to put my PS3 on the intarweb because I have no intarweb access in my living room.

Rather like when the number one PS2 launch title in Japan being the movie The Matrix, as the PS2 was cheaper than the standard DVD players there.
