Not worth it, because in a few months you'll be able to get a Playstation 3 that plays BRDs and games, wireless network access built in, HDD and access to some pretty cool games. 🙂

The next wave of HD-DVD players from Toshiba is supposed to come out soon (October)
Think I saw it on UltimateAVMag.com

Either way, HD-DVD makes more sense than Blu-Ray - it's cheaper now, and looks like it's where the future is headed (in my humble opinion). Look for one that has great DVD-upconversion too: might make it seem a little more worthy.

I read an article on those next-gen Toshibas and wasn't impressed. Apparently, the HD-A2 will be without any analog output and will still not use HDMI 1.3... also it will still be limited to 1080i. It LOOKS nicer though. That one is the same price as the current HD-A1, which IMO is better. But the HD-XA2 (or AX2?) will have HDMI 1.3 and 1080p but it will be about a grand. It seems the opinion I've seen thus far is that the HD-A1s are preferred to the HD-A2's. I don't see a reason why I should wait for the A2... unless I'm missing something.

wait, you have a 1+0 raid array with 15k rpm SCSI drives in your desktop?

If you gotta have the absolute fastest disc array, then why not? What I question is the 4x Plextors...why?

there are a lot of good ways to spend $1000. A Blu Ray player (or any movie player) ain't one of them.

I'll buy the first Hi Def format player that is under $200 out the door, tax included.

I figure I'll see that in 12-18 months.

PS3 will have HDMI 1.3, and its rather possible the $500 model will have HDMI as well. In Japan the cheaper model WILL have it, so the US version should have it too, just likely not to be priced the same as the Japanese model (of which will be cheaper than $500).

to AnitaPeterson, you should know that since DVD is a red-laser, that means the hd-dvd players still have to use a second laser to read DVD's. Blu-Ray players will also include the different lasers to play CD's, DVD's, and BRD's.

hell no 999 is WAY to much. wait for PS3 or get a HD-DVD if you really need one of the next gen players.

You've already wasted thousands of dollars on your computer. What's a thousand more? Go for it.

I know I seriously regret it. Me and my friends share so many damn expensive parts. For a while I stopped 'cuz I was totally getting broke after we got an Athlon FX 60 and some Opt. 280's.
I was like WTF? They are getting XX50 series of the latest Radeon and Geforce editions. I don't know where they are getting the damn money from, they have way more high end sh^t sitting around then I do. But I am broke as hell, car insurance is soo f'n high for me right now!

You're planning on buying a bluray player and you're broke?

no. i'd get neither as none is mature yet. there aren't enough Blu-Ray players out there and the one samsung unit as some problems. the HD-DVD works, but the current gen Toshiba HD-DVD player sucks bad. it is slow and little more then a linux PC with an HD-DVD drive and software. i say wait.

no way id pay a grand for any kinda drive... hell i dont think my computer is worth a grand at this point

True story:

Me: What are the advantages of blu ray over HD-DVD?

Sony Rep: Well, we have a 3 pronged plug, rugged outer casing to prevent fall apart, features pause, fast forward, and scene selection, its a great value.

(in case you are retarded, this is not really a true story)
