i have an apple g3 blue and white pc, with a 300mhz proc, and the rest is stock cdrom, video, everything, except for memory. thats been upgraded to 256 (wow, i know). anyway, i upgraded to osx to try it out, when i went to put any version of os 9 back on, even 9.2, and even the origional os 8.6 restore disc like some other forums have said to use, it locks up upon booting off the cd, unless i use the origional cd. then it will startup, install, and freeze when i go to boot off of it the first time. this isnt my main computer, but i would still like to have os 9.2 running on it. thanks for any help.

i have all the frimware updates from apples site, but they all need something older than osx to install, and from what i know, i cant install anything lower than osx without the firmware updates. YIKES!

Have you tried resetting the PRAM on the machine before reinstalling OS 8.6/9? Hold down Apple--Option--P--R when you reboot and it should chime 4 times - then let it boot normally. If you still get problem see if you can find a CUDA button on the motherboard and press this when the machine is shut down before trying again. It should reset everything to defaults.

yes, and thats my thoughts exactly!! my brother is the head computer tech at the company he works at, and he cant even figure it out. this is depressing, mainly because the ol blue and whites dont really run osx all that well. thanks for the help youve provided, and if you have any more....ill try it.
