I dont think the recordable function costs much more than just a player. Plus, who would not want to be able to record 25+gigs of data?

There are several players, but all external. I don't think internals have much of a market. You are possibly an exception to the rule.

The laser diode price has dropped sharply, and the other parts of the drive has as well, but I'd guess mass market reader-only drives are at least a year away.

It's hard to tell whether cheap readers will arrive before cheap burner/readers, since the burners are useful to people for backups and transfers of larger data sets even at prices that no one will pay for a reader.

Just get a HD-DVD replacement drive for the 360 Player. Those have been on clearance sales for as little as $70.

there will be a $300 cd/dvd recorder and blue ray player released sometime in the next month or two (I cant remember which brand), however considering that a recorder is already at below $500 I am not sure if $300 for the player is that great a deal (because if blue ray looses the format war then the player is just a dvd recorder, while the recorder still lets you back up to fairly large disks (though admittedly if blue ray looses then bd-r's and bd-re's will become even harder to find then they are now). If you just want to watch high definition movies on your pc then the hd-dvd drive for the 360 is the cheapest way to go (or an internal replacement one if you don't care about support).

I don't want to buy expensive disks so having just the player would be nice.

Except... you're buying a BD drive. You'll be paying for expensive disks whether they be games or movies anyways. o_o
