Those Oppo players are nice, but they are just too expensive and I doubt that you can see any diff in picture quality between an Oppo 103 and a Sony S6200, especially on a 55" screen. I have a stand alone Darbee unit, and I am not even using it anymore. no A/V equipment is an investment, stop talking yourself into spending more than you have to.

I actually just got a Sony S6200 on sale for $148 at BestBuy today. It is replacing my S790, as its 2nd hdmi port is not working. I needed the 2nd hdmi port for 3D with my non-3D ready receiver, but I rarely watch 3D anymore, so one hdmi port will work for me, and once I upgraded my receiver to something newer, it will be a non-issue. None of this year Sony players has dual hdmi ports, even the S7200 only has one hdmi. my advice is just get a Sony S6200 and save your money. you can buy 3 Sony players for one Oppo.

You are missing the point. The Oppo is meant to be a great DVD/BD player AND a pre-amp. Show me another consumer DVD/BD player that has 7.1 RCA outs with the quality DAC it has. It won't happen.

If all you are using the Oppo for is a player with HDMI out, then yes, you are wasting $$$.

no, you are missing the point, the OP is using a 5.1 Vizio Soundbar, so I doubt that he can use the GREAT 7.1 RCA outputs from the Oppo, even if he can, I doubt the Vizio Soundbar has the resolution to take full advantage of that GREAT DAC.

That is correct. The audio will pass to the sound bar from the TV over optical. Right now I am leaning towards a LG BP530 since it appears it will work with the same iPad app I have for the TV.

Op doesn't have a specific price point and wants something that will last. A sub $100 player will be cheap and is cheaply made. That is just the way it is. It is throwaway tech.

If you want a good piece of equipment, and don't mind the cost, it does allow you to easily add an amp/speaker later. That's pretty awesome. Again, if you don't ever want to add anything or build a better system, it could be a waste. I guarantee a $100 amp + single $300 center speaker would blow that soundbar out of the water. The Oppo gives you that option. :)

No I don't, I just use Netflix. I went ahead and ordered one from Amazon for $85 shipped. We'll see how it turns out.
Awesome, please let us know how it goes. That CNET review shows it to be solid. I trust them for something like that, you made a good choice!

I think Blu-ray upscaling to 4k would be pointless. Most all of the 4k TV's perform upscaling themselves. Not to mention AVR's also upscale to 4k. There is no need for a third source of upscaling to be thrown in.

I don't think 4k will ever be released in a disc format. Pretty sure all the studios will move towards cloud base streaming.

It's doable over streaming. Netflix supposedly has got the compression to around 15mbps, while average US internet speed is about 25mpbs. Though that still means half the population has slower internet than that.

Game consoles should be able to handle 4K Bluray with a firmware update, since H.265 can do 4K at 30fps encoded at just 25mbps. Sony did state the PS4 would get 4K video support at some point. I honestly doubt you'll see much in the way of 48fps or 60fps content, which requires HDMI 2.0. At least not anytime soon. Consumers haven't warmed up to higher frame rates for video content.

Maybe not by itself, but Oppos are the best players and if you are going to spend that much why not get the newest one with the best tech?
I would only invest >$100 if the display were big enough to see the difference, which might dictate a better environment. Playing BD's on a $600 player on a flat panel seems silly to me.

Not all flat panels are created equality. They range from a few hundred dollars to $25K plus. If you are using a low end panel and are satisfied with mediocrity, the Oppo isn't for you. Oppo offers some nice enhancements and features over the budget BD players (~$100), not to mention just a better built player. If that's not something you care about, a cheap $100 will do.

Well I got the LG player in. Seems nice, it's small and has physical buttons which are nice. It's a huge step up from XBMC in the sense that I just put in a Blu-Ray and it plays. No messing around with AnyDVD HD or some newer movies not playing.

I can use the LG magic remote that came with the TV to control the Blu-Ray player and with LGs SIMPLINK I can turn on the Blu-ray and it turns the TV on and changes the HDMI to the correct input.

It also has an iPhone/iPad app that allows me to control it as well plus a feature where it can stream the sound from the disc that is playing to the iPad so I can listen with headphones. Haven't really used it yet but it might be nice later at night when everyone else is asleep to avoid using the sound system.

So far a decent purchase.

How about a PS3? It loads discs way faster than any other BD player I've owned.

then you've owned some crappy bluray players. my (fat) ps3 takes longer to power on than my bluray player takes to power on + load up the movie.

That ship has sailed. Most modern Blu Ray players esp Sony are faster than the PS3 now.

It the past this was very correct though.

It depends on what features you are looking. 4k upscaling, pre-outs etc come on high end models but considering your setup for audio, you won't need that.

I personally have been using my PS4 for a bit after the 3D Blu-Ray update. Seems ok to me. I didn't have a high end player though, just a $100 panasonic unit that did 3D and could output audio via a second HDMI port when I didn't have a AVR that passed through the 3D signal to my TV. Now that I have that, The stand alone player I have isn't any worse or better than the PS4 overall except for the fact that my PS4 has no media remote.

Anyway, a cheap player for $100 like the Sony models linked earlier would be perfectly acceptable for you I'm sure.
