I would like to add a Blu-Ray player to my basement. Before doing so, I was wondering if I could get some expert advice from here.

The TV is a Mitsubishi WD-73C9
Specs http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/asset/file/spec_sheet/WD73C9_specsheet.pdf

Our Cable Box is a TIVO TCD750500
Specs http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1583

We ordered a Sound Bar which is a VIZIO S4251w-B4 5.1, waiting on the arrival.

We do have NAS server with a lot of family pictures and movies.

Two players that we looked at are the Sony BDP-S5100 and the Panasonic DMP-BDT230. What player do you think would work best with this set up? Would it be possible to hook all of this up so the sound bar plays while watching the Tivo or blu-ray?

Thanks for any help or insight that you can provide.

I've seen blu-ray players with nice features for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube, etc. but I have yet to run across one that plays home media (DLNA) well. I'd love to learn differently on that score.

That being said, I love Panasonic Blu-ray players. I have the BD-210 and it's outstanding.

ps3 does it but you have to run PS3 media server on your pc and it will transcode on the fly. i've used it quite a bit and it works great. the only downside to it is the fast-forwarding and rewinding, but that is to be expected since it's streaming.

op, i have that sony s5100 bluray player. i know it has an amazon prime app on it but i haven't used it. i've used the one on the ps3 which is better than the one on xbox360. i'm not sure if the one on the bluray player is the same as the ps3 one though, just haven't used it since i got hte player.

while i haven't done it myself yet, the sony s5100 can apparently also stream stuff with the ps3 media server (or other DLNA server) running on your pc. i simply haven't done it yet or tried since i just haven't had anything to stream to it since i got the player.

i have a ps3 and got the standalone bluray player because the ps3 can't pass hd audio and 3d signal at the same time. but the s5100 can do that no problem. overall i like the bluray player a lot. i will probably end up getting rid of mine though after november when i get the xbox1. i simply will have no use for it.

I've got a few of these Dune Blu Ray players setting in my 'parts' pile if your interested in one?

I got them from my brother who got them from a client, I've never used one or even tried setting it up. I would test before I sent it out for sure though.

Get a Blu-ray player, and a WDTV Live to play off network shares.

Yeah, I haven't owned a Panasonic, but own several Sony Blu-ray players. Sonys are rock solid for Blu-ray playback, which isn't surprising given that Sony is the biggest backer. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Panasonic was equally solid. They're a huge backer of Blu-ray, and a very respectable brand.

I can tell you that my LG Blu-ray player absolutely sucked though. I could crash the audio on the thing with repeated audio switching, and the player would lock up from time to time. Who the hell wants a Blu-ray player that can't even play Blu-ray reliably?
