Blu-Ray or DVD on PC

Easy question:

Should I plunk down $80 to buy a Blu-Ray drive to use on my monitor or should I just stick with the DVD drive? No HDMI out, just DVI.

Planning to watch BR movies.

sswingle, what i meant was that i will not be using the hdmi out (poor choice of words on my part). But glad i made you chuckle 🙂

80 is not a big expense.

your computer is a good scaler to start with. The limiting factor is your monitor. on a 19" with 1680x1050, I would say maybe not worth the effort. On the other hand, it's only 80 bux.

If you are watching from a chair / bed more than 4 feet away you probably won't see that great of a difference on a 19".

Is it $80 vs $20 (new DVD drive) or $80 vs $0? Plus, BD movies are more expensive (both rental or purchase)

Viewing distance may differ. I may be sitting on my bed with gf watching movie, or I may be watching one by myself from less than 4'.

It's $80 v. $0. I know they cost more, I will probably end up borrowing friends to start out with, and probably picking up the sweet BoB deal on amazon.

You got your gf on the bed already but you are watching tv? I hope it's pron 🙂

but when you are sitting at your desk you are 4' away from the screen???

Should be identical. DVI doesn't carry audio, HDMI does.

Both are digital, 1's and 0's are always 1's and 0's 🙂

I wouldn't bother on a 19" 1680x1050 monitor. I'd think the perceived increase in quality would be pretty small. I mean, if you're dying to spend $80 on the drive then sure, go for it, but otherwise, I'd save your money for the time being.

anydvd/dvdfab strip bluray protections now i think.

as for the last comment, no, very wrong. even on a 19" the difference between hd and dvd is easily noticable. the thing is with computers is you sit so close, you can see the difference in elvel of detail quite easily, i've seen the difference myself on a 19" widescreen. 1.76megapixels is what that screen is, which is close enough to blurays 2megapixels to be worth it. dvd is a mere 0.3 megapixel.
