Blu-ray on netbooks..

I just purchased a Samsung NC10 and am currently looking for an external drive. Just wondering if it's worth getting an external Blu-ray drive. Can the CPU and graphics card handle it? I know the screen isn't 1080p, but I'll be using this drive with my 17" laptop too.

i know this doesnt answer the question, but why would you want to watch blu ray movies on such a teeny tiny screen

I am going to say that, no, a netbook cannot handle it.

Big waste of money to buy a Blu-ray player for a system that is unable to display the ful resolution. Even regular DVDs wouldn't look very good on those tiny screens. If you want Blu-ray then get a laptop that comes with it.

As long as everything is HDCP compatible, it should work. I highly doubt your netbook screen or video card are HDCP compatible, though.

It's not going to give you smooth frame rates, if it has an Atom + Intel GMA945 or something similar; which would be the vast majority of the netbooks;

The only ones that have a good chance of working are ones with Nvidia Ion + Atom, or the new AMD Yukon platform (just annouced today: http://ces.cnet.com/8301-19167_1-10130701-100.html )

atom will die with 945..

maybe just maybe the vr chip that will come with Menlow platform will be able to handle it.
