I'm a bit surprised actually, i had thought Blu-Ray wasn't gonna do too well...but it looks like its future isn't doomed at all.

Update!

I changed the title a bit to reflect the changes.

Take a look at this! Wow, this looks very promising for Sony all of a sudden!

Major Stuff!

After seeing this list of the supporting companies, i think we have a winnar! 🙂

It makes sense since Sony and MGM are already going for Blu-Ray and if 20th Century Fox is also going Blu Ray they can be pretty sure that Blue-Ray will repalce the DVD. Looks like a strong icentive for Warner to go Blu-Ray as well and that would seal it.

i want as much space as possible when it comes to pc drives, so blueray🙂 the other standard just aims low...

I actually like the idea of Sony creating the next DVD video format. They have a history of creating high-quality standards such as BetaMax.

Regardless of who makes it, Blu-Ray appears to be the best of the next-gen formats as far as capacity goes. Cheap media is another story, but it's only a matter of time before the price comes down.

HD-DVD and such don't seem like enough of a capacity boost to me. IMO they should just use an MPEG-4 codec on existing media to go HD until Blu-Ray becomes viable.

Way too soon to know, but my first guess would be no.

Actually, mine would be a Yes.

Let's start with three assumptions.
1) The PS3 will have a Blu-Ray drive in it.
2) The PS3 will not have more than one disc drive.
3) The PS3 will be backwards compatible with the PS2 and PS1.

Not to mention that the computer industry will never adopt Blu-Ray if it's not backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs. Dell is far too cheap to shell out for two readers per system.

Ah, I was not aware that they had stated for sure the PS3 would be backwards compatible.

AFAIK backward compatability requires two lasers within the drive. This is one of the main reasons why HD-DVD was adopted as the "standard". I would venture to guess that the cheap blu-ray readers will not read ordinary DVDs.

Here you go...

2.4 Will Blu-ray support playback of DVDs?

Yes, several leading drive manufacturers have already demonstrated drives for consumer products such as video recorders that can read and write DVD and Blu-ray Discs, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. Although there is no requirement for Blu-ray recorders to be backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. With the vast amount of Blu-ray recorders that will be coming out, this will be an important feature for consumers.

Well that seals it, blu ray will be a success and almost guarentee it will beat HD-DVD, hands down to I'd say. With that level of support, one of the biigest playing cards being the PS3's support HD-DVD doesnt stand a snow balls chance in hell.
