Saw this quote in a thread over at avsforum.com and found it most amusing as it relates to this thread:
"I for one have been wanting to buy a BluRay drive for my PC just to watch High Def movies! But there?s actually three major factors of why I can?t at the moment. The first being that my monitor is not HDCP compliant (HDCP is Intel?s gay way of screwing us, and making more money. Essentially it?s a copy protection scheme that requires the display and the device to have an HDCP chip that communicates between each other and if the codes match, the video will play, if not, it?ll dumb down the resolution to like 540p!), and if I wanted to upgrade my monitor, it?d cost me $700+ (gg no re). Second, my video card is not HDCP compliant (ghey); I have a 7900GT, and the 7950?s are HDCP compliant. I?ll wait for the G80 before I upgrade for that. Third and last is the BluRay drive (or HD-DVD drive), the first gen drives are $1000, with some around $700; but what?s even worse is, that those drive CAN?T even play movies! YAY! So I just spent $2500 just so I can watch BluRay movies and I actually CAN?T?!?! That?s awesome Sony thanks! But don?t think HD-DVD is any better! First off they don?t have any PC drives out yet; but people have gotten the smart idea (and I?m not being sarcastic here) of tearing open their Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player and put that NEC drive into their PC. The PC recognizes it, but apparently the only working software player (WinDVD 8), doesn?t work with it, LOL. PC users get ****ed yet again, and have to spend money on a crappy stand-alone player instead of using the superior PC where the graphics card can now help decode the HD-DVD"
