This Lite-On DH-4O1S is a read-only device for all popular media formats, including Blu-ray discs. Besides Blu-ray discs, the drive can read DVD+/-R(W) and CD-R(W) media. The retail pack includes an extra silver bezel and a SATA cable to connect the drive to the motherboard of the PC. sorry I should have rephrased that. I attempted to checkout 3 times with this item and always get an error that it is out of stock on the last page

4x read speed is plenty fast enough for playing Blu-Ray movies, at 4x Blu-Ray's transfer rate is 144Mbps. Would be a little slower than 8x drives if you're going to be ripping movies to your HDD or something like that, but for most people this probably isn't a big issue.

Nice to see readers getting so cheap. Now when will burners come down in price. 🙁

This is a HOT deal! Now, I'm not a fan of Lite On drives, but not only is this cheap for a drive of any kind (cheapest @Newegg is $60+shipping) and of course the extra bezel and SATA cable, this comes with "Cyberlink Blu-ray software package for playback Blu-ray media in high definition." I only know of three Cyberlink software products that can play Blu-Ray movies.

PowerDVD 8 Ultra
PowerDVD 9 Ultra
Play Movie

Most of us are familiar with PowerDVD, and the "Ultra" versions run around $90-100. Play Movie is an OEM only product that also (IIRC) runs around $90. It is a plug-in for Windows Media Center and is not a stand-alone product.

In any case, all of these Cyberlink products are much more expensive than the cost of this Fry's bundle.

I'm going to try to order one... if the order goes through.

Doh! Just paid $60 from the egg.

You might try Media Player Classic Home Cinema version. Supposedly they added GPU assisted acceleration, which means, if you have a good enough video card, you can get HD playback without needing a real powerful CPU. Free is also good.

Too bad I missed this. $40 for a BD-ROM with blu ray playback software is pretty hot. Oh well. Drives are going to be getting a lot cheaper soon enough.

Didn't miss anything, since I think nobody was able to place an order.

Interestingly, I placed an order (and included some other stuff), go through the checkout page and everything, but never received an email confirmation, and the order doesn't show up in my account.

They had one in the store in Austin, TX, but it rang up $79.99 (4x drive BD-ROM) at the counter, so I passed.

It was the only one left so I thought it might be the one. Actually, they didn't have any other drives, but a lot of empty shelf space. New ones on the way??
