Was working on the machine this morning, not doing anything more than checking email. Started smelling something faint, then it got stronger, then my box locked up. I hit reset, and was greeted by a puff of smoke, and a flash of fire near the bottom of my case (below the vid card and above the bottom of the board). Shut it down hard and yanked the power cord. It stopped pretty quickly, but I know the board is fried.

Damned thing is barely a year old, and I thought Gigabyte was supposed to be all awesome with solid caps that lasted longer. Now I have to either wait for a RMA replacement, or spend money on a new board (which I may do anyways and then ebay the replacement).

Luckily I have other computers to use....shall I take one from the kids, or from my wife? :)

Edit:

Here's the pics, I was wrong on the connector, it was 4 separate pins, but they are in the correct order (in the pic they're fused together now).

Burned board
My poor Audigy :(
Seriously, my poor Audigy!
Poor USB header

The front card reader has two header cables, one is still connected (you can see in the first picture), the burned one was the other. The whole reader worked fine, I had my phone hooked up the the USB port on it, and a SD and Memory Stick Pro plugged into it at the time, no issues with it. This has been running for over a year now without a problem. I have to assume there was a surge or maybe a short in the reader itself, and caused a problem with the header on the board. You can see in the picture that the black/grnd cable actually had the cover melted right off, as the fire was worst on the left side of the header (the grounds are 7/8, with the missing pin on the far top-left being 9).

Oh well, I'm getting a new Antec 900 case, new mobo. I'm hoping the Audigy still works, but even after wiping off the soot it looks like the board itself has been....changed. Not sure how to describe it, but it's like the leads running across it are less pronounced, like they've sunk into the board? I'm betting it doesn't work, but the new mobo has decent audio, and I only have a 2.1 setup anyways.

No, stock speeds. I got pictures, I'm not sure which part malfunctioned now. There's burn marks on the mobo, but also on the sound card that was in the adjacent PCI slot, and the USB connector that was right next to it melted. I took everything out, and powered up just the mobo. It was able to make the PSU power up and stay powered, and when I held the power button it turned off properly. Obviously some part of the mobo is running, I just don't know how much, and I'm scared to plug back in any of my gear :(....don't want to blow my CPU or GPU out or something testing.

I've read several reports of MSI boards catching fire, this is the first gigabyte that I've heard of.

Unlucky!:(, & yea I wouldn't plug anything into that mbrd anymore:p.

And I think you should take the next fastest machine regardless of who complains ;).

That'd be my HTPC, then my wife's, then the server, then the kids.

Instead I just ordered new parts. I'm thinking that this had to be a short on the USB header, as it was horribly melted and all the scorch marks originated from there. I'm going to RMA it but I don't think they'll cover it, as it doesn't seem to be board related, possibly an issue with the USB card reader that was plugged in there.

Either way I have a new case, mobo, and CPU cooler coming.

The only other mobo fires I've heard of were from bad USB headers. They carry power and if there's something not wired right they catch fire.

That's where I think this started, but they've worked fine. Also, the plug was one solid piece of plastic, not little separate ones, and had the one pin blocked so you can't put it on wrong. I've got pictures I'll upload later tonight, my wife's computer doesn't want to connect to my Canon so I'll have to get my USB card reader out to get them.

Also, Purolator tried to deliver the new parts this morning, two boxes (1 for case, 1 for rest), both were damaged. My wife called me at work and said one looked like it had been kicked. The driver told her he would write a note in the system about the damage if she accepted them, or she could refuse them. She ended up refusing them, and now I gotta wait more time for replacements to be shipped. I hate Purolator with a passion....the warehouse is only a ferry ride away, seriously less than an hour of driving, and in that time it got damaged somehow.

I have tried to solely own GB motherboards my entire life, I have had on GB mobo fry and that was do to a faulty power supply. I have however seen some bad luck with other motherboards. So this has to be a first with GB, but then again there is always a bad bulb in the bunch, it is unfortunate what happened. I would not give up on GB.

Never planned to, I love GB boards. I've owned Asus, Abit, Soyo, MSI, but three out of my 4 computers now run GB and they're great. The new one is going to be a EP45-UD3P.

Whoo!

Got my new hardware today, installed and it just booted. Gotta love a quick fix. New mobo, fancy new CPU cooler, and a nice new Antec Gamer 900 case. More fans, runs cooler, I'm much happier.

Yep, don't even bother wasting the money to ship the board. They'll send it right back.

I'm betting it still works, I just don't have the extra pieces to try it. And I don't want to just throw it away, seems like such a waste.

I have an Epox board that I let the smoke out of about a year ago. Lost the network interface and the USB ports. Other than that, it worked fine. I use it as a server now with an add in NIC and USB card. Still rock solid stable and runs 24/7.

I suppose I'll keep it around and eventually find parts to test with it. Doesn't take up very much space either way. Still bummed about my audio card though, although this new HD Audio is pretty darn good quality.
