ibought a used copy of half life and installed it. it didnt come in a case just a sleeve. now i found out i cant play online. i emailed tech support and they told me the only solution was to buy a new copy to get a cd key..man its not like its a 50 dollar game or nothing. i realize that its an old game but i think the cd key issues are a bit overkill. just venting. thanks for listening

Do you have the orginal CD key? It should be printed on the sleve.
If you do you should be able to get a new one issued by sending it in to Valve. They used to do this for peopel who forgot their Steam account information(not sure if they still do)

Bad news is it can take 4 - 8 weeks before they send you a new key.

Don't by used PC software.

Roger That.

Or know what you need to get it running - i.e. serials,
registration, validation, CD checks, and all the other
excessive protections out there. Easier to just go new
than to have all these problems, esp. with online games.

Back in the DOS and Win95 days, some companies were nice about it.
If you sent them an original disc and maybe a small restock fee, they would send you the full retail box and whatever codes you needed to play it.

Havent seen that done in a while though.
