AP source: Bloomberg wants 3rd term as NYC mayor By SARA KUGLER, Associated Press Writer

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has decided to try to reverse the term-limits law he had long supported so he can seek a third term next year and help the city emerge from financial turmoil, a person close to the mayor who has been briefed on the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Bloomberg made the decision over the weekend and will announce it Thursday, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement hasn't been made. The person said the mayor has been wrestling with the decision for the past couple of months.

The billionaire former CEO will cite the nation's precarious economic situation as the reason that New York needs a tested financial manager to stay and guide the city, the person said.

The mayor, founder of the multibillion-dollar financial data firm Bloomberg LP, is reported to be worth an estimated $20 billion.

News of Bloomberg's decision was first reported by The New York Times.

The move is risky because the mayor would be going against both his own prior support of term limits and polls that show the public supports them.

When Bloomberg vetoed a bill in 2002 that would have extended the terms for some officials, he said the proposed law amounted to changing the rules for personal political gain. In recent months, however, the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent hinted that he'd be willing to overturn the measure.

While I am personally against term limits laws of say, 2 terms, I do support longer term limits laws, like say 12 or 20 years laws.
But the hypocrisy of Bloomberg is astounding. For 10 years the guy says one thing. Then he wants another term, and POOF, he does a 180.
Can't trust those Republicans on anything.

If Bloomberg is a Republican, he's not much of one. Not only did he leave the Republican party, but he's pretty progressive on most issues. (this is how he's been able to get elected in New York)

I tend to agree that if he wants to get rid of term limits or change them, it's too late to do that now. Maybe he could extend them starting with the next mayor after him, but the way it looks now is just a grab for another term. Too bad, I think he's a really good mayor. I just think changing the rules for yourself while in office is a bad idea.

he was a democrat. then he switched parties and ran as a republican because he didn't feel like dealing with the democratic primary (whereas in the republican primary, he was basically the only one running). he was elected as a republican with the endorsement of Rudy... into his second term, he switched parties a third time to independent.

his party changes for the most part, though, have been moved brought about by pragmatism, not ideology. I don't think his positions on issues are different today than they were when he was a democrat.

As strange as it may seem, winnar111:

QFT

Whatever he may be, Mayor Bloomberg as a "Republican" has never been anything more than the ultimate RINO.

Update:

Tomorrow the City Council votes to allow Bloomberg and themselves third term against the over half a million voters that passed 2 different votes for 2 term limits.

There is no other way to describe this as Anti-American as you can get.

Tomorrow New York City may officially be declared a dictatorship.

Because he wants to change a city law. Duh! :disgust:

That makes him a criminal and America hater? I can tell you about a lot of people who want pot legalized. Does that make them criminals or America haters?

Democracy is dead and no one in here cares

2/3 of the City Council voted to ignore the voters and granted themselves and Bloomberg to be on the ballot for 3rd Terms.

America is dead. It's officially a Dictatorship.

They didn't declare him mayor for a third term, he has to run and be elected. If this is as unpopular with the voters as it currently appears, he won't be re-elected.

Or did you forget that important detail in your tirade?

Not if you count all the people who only exist in his head or the voices that only he can hear.
