Not seeking formal medical advice (!:Q!), but does anyone here know what the *lower* limit for normal/healthy blood pressure is? :)

thanks

thanks, Viper GTS : ) I am actually thinking of hypotension -- all the data seem to relate to values above a certain point. I'm curious about when it is too low.

Below about 100 mmHg systolic, you'll probably start feeling it and falling over. There isn't a lower limit as such although 120 mmHg sys is sometimes quoted as normal - but there is a lot a variation.

Your BP is too low, if you are getting symptoms from it. Sometimes, hypotension only manifests when you stand up (so called postural hypotension - when BP falls when you stand; it should rise or stay the same).

So if someone had 90/50 would that be bad (pose a health risk)?

The most important things about low blood pressure, are 1) how much lower it is than (your) normal, and 2) have you got any symptoms from it?

If your blood pressure is normally 140 mmHg sys, and if you become ill, and your BP is only 120 mmHg sys, then that is highly significant, and can signify a serious illness. Low BP is a problem when there is not enough pressure to supply adequate blood to vital organs like brain, kidneys, etc. (It is a fall in BP, that usually leads to lack of blood supply to organs, rather than the absolute value).

Some people have a normal BP of 90 or 100 systolic and seem to suffer no ill effects from it. If you have no symptoms, and this is not a sudden drop, and there is no obvious cause, then I don't think that this is likely to be a problem. It would be sensible for anyone with any concerns to see their family doctor, and have their BP checked regularly.

Blood pressure is dynamic, a reading taken in isolation is relatively useless, unless it's super low or super high. Best thing to do if you're concerned is keep a log of your bp once or twice a day.

BP is sensitive to your h20 intake, level of conciousness, etc, etc...

Why are you worried about it?

I'm routinely about 80-90/50-60. I pass out if Dystolic goes below 70. Are you properly hydrated? I actually tested at 120/80 once, I think I was extremely stressed/apprehensive at the time, I can remember another time that I was 74/52 and I felt nice and calm. I goto the doctor pretty regularly because of a past incident and as a result I got a real good feel for my normal blood preassure. The doc's don't worry if it's normal for you to be low. You need consistent readings to find out what your normal range is, as long as you aren't out of that range you are ok. Let your doc decide if it's a health risk.

Gosh that must suck. I'm a bit low myself though and have never had any troubles come of it at all. Every time I go to the doctor I'm between 110-115/76-78, EXTREMELY consistent to say the least, I've been at these levels since I was 16 (18 now). My dad and brother are also a bit low and the one thing we all have in common is stamina. I was told that people with lower blood pressure tend to have bad physical abilities but I'm starting to think this is not the case. I have a friend (not related to me) and his levels are a bit lower than mine and he has amazing stamina, better than mine, my brother or dad! Although he dose only weigh 140 pounds at 5'9" so he's quite skinny. Jufur: I'd say that 90/50 is very bad though, a person with a blood pressure like that probably has a weak heart, I dont even think weed could get a normal persons blood pressure that low. If you feel fine though, and feel physicaly able to run at least 3 miles with ease then I wouldn't really worry about.

Thanks to eating dorm food, my bp skyrocketed to 170/92
and.... 2 months later, after moving to an apartment, eating less meat, salt, eating better overall... dropped to an acceptable 140/79. Still a long way to go.

I heard if you keep it below 140 on the first number, and 70's on the 2nd number, you are ok. But as always, there are abnormalities, so ask your doctor.

I was at the doctor this morning and bp was 90/50 -- it's been as high as 108/70 in the past but is usually ~90/60. I asked the nurse if that was too low and she did not know. So I was just wondering. No related symptoms. As far as stamina, I'd say I am above average energy and certainly in cardiovascular endurance. I guess that's just my normal range

BP has no effect on stamina that I'm aware of. BP doesn't measure your resting heart rate, or the cardiovascular fitness of the system in general. The worst thing about low blood preasure is being much more sensative to cold temperatures.

Your mental and emotional state in reference to a temperature has little to do with blood preassure as well but may be a result of the actual physical symptoms of it. Low BP often results in people that have cold hands/feet and other extremeties. Cold is also probably more penetrating. If that is what makes you hate cold weather than yes, it's probably because you are a low BP kinda girl. :)

Blook pressure also depends a lot on the person. Typically, people run at about 120/80 but with anything, everyone is different. Mine is usually fairly low myself and I pride that with being in good shape. If there are no related symptoms, like fainting, you are probably one of many with lower than average blood pressure. I am of course, being brief, and one could go into a lot of technical details with blood pressure... You are in good shape, keep yourself properly hydrated, eating healthy....be happy! :)

Some people dont like the cold because it makes their joints hurt, my bro dad and me have that problem. I had no idea blood presure had no indicating factors on stamina, a doctor at kiser(sp) said it dose! Bastard. Guess he was not thinking straight? I myself was inclined to believe him, I made a quick connection in my head, heart rate, blood pressure, pretty easy to think one has a direct effect on the other.

Thanks MrsSkoob :) I have one of those home test bp meters and last night after exercising and drinking several coffees it had "elevated" to 99/55. I still felt great, and I've never feinted (except once at age 7 when I inhaled helium ). I'll check with my doctor just to be sure, but I guess it's just normal for me.
