I'd like to start blogging more, but I have two topics I'd like to blog about. Instead of maintaining two separate blogs, can I just use a single blog instance and setup categories? I know SEO might not be the best, and readers might get confused, but if I categorize and/or tag appropriately, would it really matter? I'm not looking to become a blog people "follow" constantly - I'd much prefer to just get picked up by search engines.

What are the topics? It really depends how diverse they are - if one subject is anal stimulation and the other is Keynesian economics (for example), I think maybe you should do two blogs.

Technical = 90% of the blog entries
10% of them will be about random things - good food, trains, etc.

I'd stick to 1 topic per entry. Do 1 thing very well instead of a couple of things half assed.

I talk about photography and programming in my blog. Well, I intend to, but I've actually only ever posted one photography post and no one ever reads it :\

:hmm: If what you say in the OP is true ("I'm not looking to become a blog people "follow" constantly - I'd much prefer to just get picked up by search engines") then I see no problem with this. My blog is more of a personal journal than anything, and if people find something I post interesting or useful then that's a bonus.

I wasn't going to write about more than one topic in a single entry. I was just going to write about multiple topics and tag them/categorize them.

Oh yea, that's cool. If you're not interested in a following, why not. Who knows; you may even get a following of people that like random stuff :^D

I could never maintain a consitant single topic blog. It would be utter chaos. I'd call it Hindenblog.

Depends who's reading it. If it's all technical, you're audience isn't going to want to read about what you had for dinner.

Blog posts should be kept to one subject or else it confuses the reader. No reputable newspaper or magazine talks about two things in the same article.
