As some of you may know I am about to set off on a trip to Japan for two years and I've decided to keep a record of my exploits and adventures on the web via some sort of blog. However, I adamantly REFUSE to set up a blog on one of those evil websites (Xanga, etc.) when I have a domain and a free 1&1 hosting account I can use for another two or so years.

Anybody know of some (perhaps perl-based & free) blogging software that I could set up on my account complete with an ability for viewers to leave comments?

Any help appreciated...
 
I don't think there's too much reason not to use a blogging site, as long as it's a good one. (I don't consider xanga to be particularly good)
 
I don't really understand the blogger thing. I'm trying to sign up, but it's asking me for a .blogspot address, which I don't have nor want. The other option, the advanced setup, requires and FTP address and whatnot.

How exactly did you set it up so that you can use it on your own server?

Either you publish to blogspot or you publish to your own server.

using ftp I told it where I want it to be published on my site, the necessary credentials, and what the web address is for that folder. In my case i made a subdomain of opinion.wisetyro.com point to the ftp dump folder.

That's it really.
