Blog Question from a noob

I have never used a blog service. I have seen maybe 2 blogs in my life.

I was thinking about starting one to document a certain span of my life. Maybe so someday my kids can look back at it or something.

What do I need to do this? Is this a service I can purchase to do this? Is there a way to make it so only certain people have access to it?

No this isn't a joke I really have no idea about BLOGS
