I m from muslim parents but not believer at all so it s not like i m qualified to talk on behalf of muslims but since i was raised by a genuinly muslim mother (my father wasnt a muslim practicaly speaking since he never prayed and only performed Ramadan once he retired) i can say that i was influenced by a muslim culture.
Now to answer your question is not that simple, it is obvious that death penalty wont change the past and bring back to life the victim, neither it will give this latter any compensation post mortem, so as such death penalty could well be assumed as being some kind of vengence, that s for the uselessness side.
On the other hand how to accept that an eventual murderer that acted extremely savagely with say a children, practicing torture, rape and all sort of horrors, that such a murderer could be eventualy rewared by being jailed and have the possibility to live out of the victim parents taxes, that is, imagine that you have to pay to feed the guy that killed your child and destroyed your life and mental sanity definitly, and there s no vengence in refusing this, sometime i wonder if the Iranians are not right when condemning someone to death and that only the victim relatives have the power to decide if the guy must be amnistied from death penalty or not, like this one that was forgiven at the last moment by a mother whom he killed the son, and she had already a son that deceased in a traffic accident :
