How many city blocks are in a mile? I'm wondering, 'cuz I walk at least 24 blocks or so to church (round-trip) twice a week, plus at least another 10 or 12 every day around campus. Any ideas?

Going by street numbers, here in Seattle. 45th - 55th, plus about the equivalent in changing cross-streets and across campus to get to the street.

LOL, street numbers are meaningless. We gotta know exactly how long your blocks are, and if they are equal in size :p

Here's an idea. Have someone drive you once, and check their odometer.

According to my research, a mile will be the length of approximately 19 city blocks. Of course, YMMV. (literally. :) )

I've heard that 10 city blocks comprise a mile....but, that was a long time ago.

In the "olden days" a standard city block was 440 feet, from center to center of each dividing road. That's 10 40 foot lots plus half of a 40 foot wide street right-of-way at each end of the block. Which means 12 of these blocks is/are exactly one mile.

But who knows what you have there in Seattle or anywhere else?

A block is a non-standard unit of measurement. It could be 700 miles (thats one hell of a block :) ) or it could be 50 feet.

It varies greatly by city.
For example, Portland is roughly 16 blocks to the mile, a block being six 50-foot wide lots and a 30-foot wide street.
Seattle, IIRC, is similar.
SLC has the largest blocks I have ever seen at only 8 to the mile.

Where I'm from, one block is approximately one mile. Love the country with its nicely spaced 1-2 mile grid of roads.
