Hey guys, living at university with a few roomates and we'll all on a DSL Connection via a 3com Router. Now there are 4 computers connected and I know they all just leave Imesh and Kazaa on and suck up my bandwidth, especially when they are uploading to people. I guess what I was thinking is that I could block the upload ports on the rouyer for the 4 thus saving precious bandwidth. Anyone know what ports I would have to close in order to acheive this?

Not sure about iMesh but if it's on the FastTrak network like Kazaa2, then you're screwed as far as blocking ports goes. Kazaa2 can hop around and uses common ports like 80 to communicate. If you use a Linux router with enough work you should be able to completely block most p2p traffic. It's not a trivial thing to set up however. You can also do a QoS type thing but again you need a linux router...Search through this forum. I've posted a few links in other threads asking about pretty much the same thing. :)

The easiest thing to do would be to tell the guys to turn it off when they're not using it and to ratelimit the uploads if the clients have that functionality.

If all other options fail, you could always call the RIAA on them. The Gestapo will be there with a Subpeona in minutes. :)

You could just get them to turn of sharing with other users. As long as they do not have anything for other users to download you will not have your problem

Almost all fire sharing apps have a way to limit the upload bandwidth. Make it worth their while to limit their upload speeds. Explain to them that overloading the "upload" part actually interferes with the "download" part and slows it down. Set each computer to use only 1/4 of the upload bandwidth. Once you do that, things should get much bettter.
