i'm trying to disable outgoing ports for certain games. Counterstrike and Neverwinter Nights... and hoping that these blocks dont affect other games i have. where can i find a way to block certain outgoing ports so that the games no longer function? and how many ports would i need to block?

trying to end a nusciance that's been annoying my family for over a year now.

my brother keeps everybody up at night screaming at his computer... my dad's too wimpy to pull the plug on him, i asked him if simply disabling the ports and putting a stop to his gaming would be acceptable, he said fine.

i'm not trying to piss my brother off, i'm trying to sleep. he'd still be able to use the internet for what it was intended, but he wouldnt be screaming at the top of his lungs and depriving the rest of us of sleep.

and i could beat him up, but i'm too damn lazy. i find this as a much more fun solution. :D

CS uses ports around 27000 to 27030ish. Blocking those might stop him from playing CS. Most servers use 27010 as the "broadcast" address, then 27005 and moving up for the connections to the player, if i remember correctly.

As for NWN...check and see if there's any instructions anywhere on how to allow it to work through a router, then block those ports :)

Hope you can get some sleep soon!!

BTW, how's your mp3car player coming along? You got any good advice from the other forum? :) Lemme know via PM if you don't want to fill this thread with it! :)

From the Neverwinter Nights Technical FAQ:

If you are trying to play through a firewall of some sort, here is some information for you to help you get connected. Neverwinter Nights uses UDP, not TCP for its connections. If you think that your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the game servers, please make sure that the following ports are open:

* Ports 5120 through 5300
* Port 6500
* Port 27900
* Port 28900

In addition to opening the ports listed above, you may need to allow incoming connections on the port you are running your server on (5121 by default) and forward those connections to the computer running the server.

Sounds like someone needs some anger management. Nobody should be screaming at a videogame at ANY hour of the night or day.

You could just set up your PC to send him a ping flood at random intervals; something like
ping x.x.x.x -n 50 -w 1 -l 65530
Replace x.x.x.x with his IP address.
It helps to have multiple windows open doing this to really flood the network. I'm not sure offhand how you'd program this though. Probably a visual basic program could do it quick. I know DOS programming though, not Windows. Just a thought anyway.
That'll send 50 x 65530byte data packets at his PC, which'll kill his own ping times....of course, thinking about that, there'd probably just be even more yelling then.
Or else go out to the circuit breaker box and flip the switch for his room/PC. Or a small radio-controlled switch in addition to his own power switch. Press a button in another room, and his PC will just begin to shut down.

jeff: i dont want to bring his computer to a crawl... and i also dont want to make my computer unusable... well, i do have a second machine that could constantly ping his computer... might be funny.... anyway.. i just want a long term solution i dont have to activate nightly.

Glitchny: Some people are just unreasonable. you have a better chance of bioengineering pigs to fly using only a spoon than getting him to be considerate of others.

just picked up controlling switches, and stuff for it... by tomorrow, when my memory arrives, i'll have everything ready for final installation. i went to a metal supply place today, and picked up some nice sheet aluminum, to hold the motherboard to.

it's gonna work out well :)
