blocking P2P

What is teh best way to do so?

I have a motorola router with ddwrt and I tell it to block all p2p with the qos, but it does not block it. My gf's sis is downloading 3 GB a day of god only knows what. She is using this program called ares, so I tired specifically blocking that program, but it will not block it. What else can I do? I tried blocking her completely, but then i get all these compaints all day about her not having internet. She is only living here for 1.5 more months, so what can i do (short of kicking her out on the street) to just block this dam program?

The only real way is to have something that looks at layer7 (application). Maybe the computer based free firewalls/proxies could take care of it but I only use business stuff so don't know about them.

Hell, I'd just block her completely. Seems pretty simple to me, stop downloading gigs of data a day or else you don't get internet. Your house, your rules. If she doesn't like it, maybe she should find her own place to live and pay for her own net.

Just my $0.02, though. Probably not a great idea if you don't want to piss of the GF. 🙂

Turn off UPNP? Since most P2P program have to open a port for incoming and outgoing. If turning off UPNP, then P2P program can't open an incoming port automatically. And that will either reduce the traffic dramatically or completely block it.

If you have a spare computer with at least 2 Network Cards, then you could put together a ProxyWall with L7 Filtering.

I currently use Untangle which has L7 by default, but you could also use IPCOP Firewall, or SmoothWall Firewall with the L7 AddOn.
