Blocking issues with XP install...

Very weird... When I run Windows XP compatibility check, it reports one Blocking Issue being a CheckPoint Secure Remote software. The thing is, this VPN client is not installed on my system. I had had it before, but uninstalled it long time ago. I did the File search and Registry search to look for the leftover files and keys, but could not find anything...

Any ideas?

Sounds like clean install time to me! :)

Seriously, whenever in doubt you should really do yourself a favor and do a clean install. There are many things that could be lingering, such as old DLL's, entries in the win.ini or sys.ini (old Win 9x compatibility crap)... drivers, etc.

Yes, I know... A bit scary though to to a clean install... :) Can I use a Win ME boot floppy to do XP install or do I need to find an XP boot floppy?

If you have the full version of XP you can simply boot from the CD.

WinXP won't install from a DOS prompt (which is what you get when you boot on a WinME disk).

If you can't boot from your CD then you will probably have to create some Win2K installation floppies or somesuch to get to a 32 bit command prompt for install.

Win Xp will install form a DOS prompt.

I have done it several times in the last week.

Make sure you use "smartdrv" before doing it this way, or the file copy progress will take forever.

After your drive is Fdsiked, Partitioned, and Formated to your liking, type Smartdrv at the A:\ prompt.......(ie: A:\SMARTDRV)

At the A:\ prompt, change directories to the CD Drive and type I386\WINNT.......(ie: E:\I386\WINNT)

It will start the set up in a DOS screen, then change to a Windows based install after a it copies the files it needs.

I had to get SMARTDRV from the Microsoft web site.

It's run in DOS, from a start-up floppy.

I just added it to me ME start-up disk, and use it when needed.

It may be on your disk already.
