Blocking Bittorrent Traffic

On our network, we use Optenet for filtering. I was asked to research methods to block bittorrent, and I've come up short on google. Now, I don't have access to the software itself, only to writing suggestions on ways to block it from being used. After emailing optenet, they said just block the ports bittorrent uses, but I know that it's not possible to just block ports 6881-6889 because bittorrent clients will also use other ports.

I need ways to block bittorrent either by url filtering, port filtering, or keyword filtering. I would like to avoid blocking all pages that contain the word "bittorrent" as keyword filtering would. If this is the only solution, though, I will ask that it be employed.

Is it possible to block bittorrent traffic by blocking the trackers? If I have the admin add a list of all the popular bittorrent trackers to the forbidden urls, would that stop the traffic (at least for those torrents using those trackers)?

Don't tell me I need a new netadmin, I'm aware of that, and I can't do anything about the situation. I just need to help him clear up the problem.

With what you have I believe blocking those ports and blocking the popular pages would be your best bet. You need an application filter that can examine the packets on your network and tell if it is a bittorent packet, but unless Optenet can do this you would need another piece of software.
