Blockbuster, world's largest video rental chain, will offer 99-cent DVD rentals starting in January to attract customers during this economic slump.
Since market conditions have made it difficult for Blockbuster to enact new bank credit, the retailer is also renegotiating leases for a third of their 7,000 stores.
Blockbuster also has had to deal with a market of downloadable videos, movie rentals by mail, and differing price points based on number of days DVDs are rented.
Securities analyst, Edward Woo, seems to think this new pricing scheme--to bring in more traffic--could work to help Blockbuster weather through this tough time.
Blockbuster will also cut spending by taking a step back on remodeling efforts of its stores. This year, it remodeled 600 stores.
Now that you can order pizza on your TiVo!, are 99-cent DVD rentals really an incentive to get into your car and get that movie you want to watch?
After all, it is winter now..and that lumpy couch is oh so comfy.
