From what I understand, this is just one of the dozens of chapters of BLM, that are all self-run and pretty much act like their own independent cells. There isn't a single central administrative unit with one governing message.
This one, however, had pretty much branded itself as synonymous with an organized, central BLM chapter as they have managed to capture the vast majority of donations to BLM, hence the piles of treasure they had to dump on this property. It also seems that a few of the leaders in this chapter are pretty pissed, too.
It's skeezy as hell, but all that being said, some of the justification for the property does make sense, but it certainly doesn't make sense in terms of the area (high cost) that they chose to purchase it (so it just sounds like a Trump-like slush fund or RE laundering vehicle). I heard the other day the argument that it was to be used as a "cultural and education center, space for artists to work and use as a gallery, training and consulting, temporary shelter, etc." I mean, all of that is good and makes sense and can certainly justify a large compound....but this isn't that. Could have have gotten much more for way less.
Hell, I get some $2-3 million stately old-money brownstones in DC area (Chocolate City!) in my daily Redfin spam.
