I want to upgrade my DVD player, and I want to watch Netflix without extra hassle of hooking up the laptop. I play games occasionally, but not a lot. Any time I see a game I like, it's out on Xbox.

- Samsung has a BlueRay + Netflix ($180 at Costco) + need wi-fi access point
- Xbox has Netflix and games ($300 at Costco), but no BlueRay + wi-fi access point
- PS3 has BlueRay and Netflix + wi-fi ($300), but sucky games?

What should I get?

PS3. That is what I went with.

It's a myth that the PS3 has sucky games. For $299 you get a Blu-ray player, Netflix, free online play, etc. With the 360 you're stuck with DVD and have to pay $50/year for Netflix and online play, on top of Netflix's service.

Depends on your budget. The PS3 has more options, but is about twice the price. If you've got the flow, get the PS3, otherwise get that BR player from Costco.

Wrong forum!

Go with a PS3 though.

I'd say PS3 would be the best bet honestly. Assuming the newer ones aren't as loud as my 60gb model is, I can barely stand using it for movies anymore. :(

Whoa, I can do NetFlix on my PS3? I'm going to have to research this, considering I was thinking about a roku box.

I have them all....and if it was a choice for just one, i would 100% say PS3...without hesitation.

Sucky games? Hah. Go play Uncharted 1+2, Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance 1+2, MGS4, LBP, Warhawk, inFAMOUS, and go tell me the PS3 has "sucky games".

Matter of fact, anybody who (ever) said that is a moron.

I've been thinking HTPC myself. Blu-ray, cable card tuner, and netflix all in one. Of course, I already have a Blu-ray player and DVR and 360, so it must just be my need to upgrade.

PS3 is still one of the best blu-ray players, is a great upscaling DVD player, will stream netflix soon, can stream media from PCs, and is a good gaming console.

FYI, PS3 now has over 550 games out. About the only thing it lacks is Halo but you get Uncharted 1-2 and Ratchet & Clank in its place.

It would be perfect if the new models still had PS2 backwards compatibility, but luckily I have a 60 GB model with BC.

Halo...?
If you want to play that mediocre game just buy 1+2 on PC..won't be missing anything not playing the newer ones.

Also, I love my 60gb as well. It would be a good idea to find one (of course, if you wanted that). I put a 320gb HDD in mine.

They are both the same price. But even when the PS3 was more expensive, it was still worth it. As you said, it has more options.

PS3 definitely. I have every game console and all the biggest games are multiplatform and the PS3 gets updated much more than a Blu-ray player would plus it has all the games and upscales DVD great as well. PS3 has wireless internet and don't need to pay to play games over the net. It's getting Netflix very soon so I'd go with a PS3. Oh and my backwards compatible 80GB is infinitely quieter than my launch Xbox 20GB. The PS3 does everything you want it to.

The PS3 is not really noisy when playing movies, just games. It's no louder than your average HTPC. I think if you want an all-in-one setup, it's definitely the way to go.

...and sucky games? PS3 exclusives are consistently higher rated than the 360's exclusives. At least that's what they say. I have no reason to doubt it. MGS4, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Gran Turismo, WipEout HD...

Search e-bay for a 19-blade fan. The launch models (only) used a much quieter 19-blade fan than later models of the 60/20/80gb. They switched to a 15-blade which sounds like a hair-dryer. It won't be silent, but it is much better than the 15-blade fan.

I have PS3, but I ended up getting a regular BR player for our den for movie watching. Reason being is the PS3 has no infrared remote capability.

Technically is supports it, but I wouldn't recommend using it.

Why is that? I've heard of a few problems with LG displays, and some issues who couldn't set it up right with Samsungs(although this is very simple- just make sure Anynet is enabled and PS3 is set to yes for control over HDMI in your system menu) but other then that everything I have read has it working flawlessly, some people even using their TV remotes to play around in Home which I though was very surprising. LG displays seem to have an issue with only supporting on/off, and Sammy displays don't work properly at all if not using Anynet.

My only experience with CEC and the PS3 Slim was with a Samsung LN40A650 display.%2

From the threads I have read about it, it was a 46N550 owned that was using his remote to play around in Home(this was post 3.01, don't know if that made a difference but I know they changed some mappings around on Bravias). I would assume anything the 550 series can do, your 650 should do better.

Thanks for the info on the PS3s ability to do CEC Ben, this is the first place I ran into that info.

How does the audio output work on the PS3 and most of the Samsung Blu-ray players? I should have a Panny G10 arriving soon, but I want the audio from Blu-rays to go right to a somewhat old Technics (Panasonic brand?) receiver that has optical but no hdmi inputs. I'm hoping I don't need to replace that if possible.

Thanks for the information so far!
