Blizzard Buys Candy Crush for $6 billion with a B

Just checked, it's still not April first.

Maybe they'll have little bags of candy in the con goodie bag this week.

They bought rights to the game or bought the company King? link?
They bought King:-
http://techcrunch.com/2015/11/02/ac...r-king-digital-entertainment-for-5-9-billion/

$6bn for a handful of "match 3" 'games' that themselves are just "themed" rip-off clones of 10-15 year old Popcap stuff like Bejeweled, Chuzzle, Zuma, Luxor, etc. The "modern development model" of "monetizing" customers to the tune of $22 avg each for renting exactly the same stuff that you could buy outright for $5-10 from Popcap with no nagging "in-app purchases" over a decade ago purely because it's "moe-bye-ul" just about sums up the mobile gaming industry (and the gullibility of mobile gamers) for me. 🙄

And King are an obnoxious developer. They tried to trademark the word "candy" then later trolled the devs of "The Banner Saga" for having the word "Saga" in it. I wouldn't give them even $5.90, let alone a comical $5.9bn.

Candy Crush has been losing users over the past few years, so it seems strange that they'd buy this particular freemium title.

This is kindof like that whole Microsoft buying Mojang after Minecraft already hit saturation, isn't it?

And whose name got changed when that financial transaction occurred?

What's in a name?

Activision owns Blizzard. Period. The name combining was just to appease the WoW base, the whole reason for the purchase. It didn't go the other way around. Blizzard received money from Activision. Not the other way around. I don't see what's so hard about this.

Activision did not buy Blizzard. Blizzard has pretty much never had full autonomy. They've almost always been owned by some third party, and one of those third parties was Sierra. Sierra was absorbed by Vivendi Games. Vivendi is a rather large French multimedia conglomerate, which ended up merging its games division, Vivendi Games, with Activision to form Activision-Blizzard. Activision-Blizzard has since bought a considerable amount of stock back from Vivendi, which means they have majority control. The thing is... Activision and Blizzard are still two companies under the Activision-Blizzard umbrella; however, Kotick, Activision's previous CEO, is the CEO of Activision-Blizzard. So, you could argue that the previous leader of Activision now has control over Blizzard.

It's the type of game where you can go fairly far if you're decently skilled then it'd stop you dead in your tracks then force you to either buy currency or spam Facebook friends about the game in order to move on. Perfect example of what Freemium games are all about.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe Actizzard will get rid of that element of the game?

While Activision did pay for Vivendi Games. Vivendi became the largest shared holder of the company Activision Blizzard. So, they merged with a company but were not the largest share holder of the new company. Then in 2013 Activision Blizzard paid 5.8B to regain control. It is a new legal company now with the name Activision Blizzard. Activision Blizzard is the parent company of Activision and Blizzard. Activision doesn't own Blizzard.

Edit: Looks like I got beat to my history lesson by Aikouka

This is just damn sickening. Why try to innovate when you can rip-off other games, dress it up a little (ie lipstick on a pig), give it a different name, and profit.

Eh China's economy has been doing it for eons.

But I hear you, insanity meets insanity. I should start making simple candy games in my basement and cash in.

the casual gamer market is orders of magnitude larger then all of the crap we drool over. Not saying this is a good deal but the potential numbers are bigger for that reason.
