Blizz story is all the same again. Humans = Terran, Angels = Protoss, Hell = Zerg

Deserves its own thread for lore discussion.

I just started Act III. I'm bit disappointed Blizz is doing their old schtick storytelling again.

Angels = stubborn tradition-bound powerful beings JUST LIKE PROTOSS.

Tyrael = Just. Like. TASSADAR. He went against his own kind to help Humans. Angels (PROTOSS) hate him, but Humans (TERRAN) love him. "If your traditions and laws cause you to inaction, I will help them myself"

Azmodan unleashing floods of demons into human world = ZERG INVADING KOPROLU SECTOR ANYONE????

I SWEAR IF TYRAEL ENDS UP SACS HIMSELF JUST LIKE TASSADAR, I WILL BE ROLLING MY EYES HARDCORE.

This is still surprising to people? Blizzard titles typically don't innovate in any area - as a general trend they take existing concepts and mechanics and polish them to a higher level than you see in other games they take inspiration from. That's their strength more than anything else.

Honest, both star craft II and Diablo III feels like reskinned like a war craft. It's very evident that its the same people behind all 3.

@Shortylickens Or Planescape: Torment!

It's like in movies, the lowest common denominator that makes for good foreign sales is explosions and skin, like Transformers 2, only here is action and over-the-top cinematics.

You mean the Zerg, Protoss and Human are like the Demons, Angels and Humans? Diablo came before Starcraft.

Also, there are 3 factions. I can name 20 games that have similar setups. So what? This is a paranoia thread if I ever saw one... Sorry to be the party pooper.

Wait!?! There is a good side, a neutral side (who goes to good), and an evil side? Oh man look out! Stop the presses, I've heard this story before...

Who plays Diablo for the story? Diablo bad, you good, kill Diablo. Good enough story for me.

I like how the OP doesn't realize that Diablo with humans, angels, and demons predates StarCraft entirely.

However, humans, angels, and demons is a trope that predates computers by far 😛

This sounds like a very serious situation.

So that begs the question, can Blizzard do anything awesome relating to story, or do they like their slot-machine games where everyone just spends time for loot?

The real question is, do they need to do "anything awesome relating to story", and the answer is no. Game play > story.

in a game like Diablo i agree. game play is better then story. same with basic shooters.

in a RPG though i think its Game play <story. But hell diablo 3 is a Loot Pinata. its all about getting the loot..

So you're going to tell me that Shakespeare wasn't original??!!!!!

D:

Anyway, it's extremely rare that a game is both engrossing fun to play and story-driven amazement. Blizz has tapped into the addicting game play with ancillary story model, where a company like Bioware was always about Story/immersion with good-enough gameplay (seems to be changing, of course).

Honestly, I can't think of a game that has effectively tapped both of these models...

Oh, wait: GoW 1. Haven't played 3, yet.
(GoW 2 was fun, of course, but mostly just more of the same from the first one. Which isn't a bad thing, just that once you know what to expect, the luster has worn off a bit).

Uh, he just said the story would be the same if protoss were replaced by angels, and hell by zerg. Not that these concepts in themselves are unique

You're right. There are parallels. The story, however, was the part of the game for which I had the lowest expectations. As cheesy as the story is, I expected MORE cheese, and thus Blizzard exceeded my expectations. However, I am fairly dissapointed about the whole
"[Diablo] Now I will finally be rid of the angels FOREVER!!!" and then "[Us] Now we have killed Diablo FOREVER!!!"
stuff. IMO there's no need for such finality.

In that final cutscene I expected a diablo to turn into a soul gem while falling, I was very disappointed when he didn't.
