hagbard, of course it's partly about the oil reserves in iraq and politicians are eternal opportunists. Daddy Bush didn't drive to Baghdad because the original goal was liberation of Kuwait's oil and containment of Saddum in the hope his country would fall apart of the inside.

They failed to realize sanctions would have no effect on Saddum's regime and overlooked the effect they have on the population. The cycle is being repeated with NK.

It's all a result of random foreign policy, too much concentration of power in the U.S. in the executive and lack of resolve of foreign countries to provide their own damn security.

Provide own security? But who is really threatned by Saddam? Other than other Iraqis?
And the only country that poses a security risk to my country is the US, and there's nothing we can do about that.

We are, because he has shown and proven that he supports terrorists, he has shown and proven that he wants WMD, he has shown and proven that he cares for no one but himself, and finally he has shown and proven he hates the Unites States.

The UN cannot keep sanctions on Iraq indefinitely. At some point they will have to end. At that time Iraq will start selling it's oil on the world markets and have a state income in billions of dollars a year.

Saddam could use that money to rebuild Iraq. He could provide schools and hospitals for his countrymen. He could stop killing the Marsh Arabs and creating one of the world's greatest ecological disasters it has ever known.

Or he could rebuild his army and continue on in his quest for chemical, biological and nuclear weapons until he is so powerful that he could only be stopped at a terrible cost.

Which course do you think Saddam is most likely to take?

I hope he plants flowers. Pretty red ones. Maybe with some blue to contrast.

Flowers would be nice but so far he has only planted them around the huge palaces he has built for himself with the money that was to be used to feed his people.

Gotta love a man who shows *and* proves things. I mean, he really goes all out. That's like two helpings at the buffet. Like double-dipping. Like POSTING IRAQ FLAMEBAIT, AND THEN POSTING SOME MORE.

Hagbard- If you had ANY working knowledge of the PGW you would remember that Bush Sr. wanted to push into Baghdad but our allies were less than willing.

1) BS
2) Probably
3) true
4) why shouldn't he, the US once supported him in his invasion of Iran, then turned around and decided to get rid of him after giving him the impression that the invasion of Kuwait would have no significant consequence.

here is something interesting

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2644783.stm

The United States says it is convinced that Iraq does have weapons of mass destruction, and that its stance towards Baghdad remains unchanged.

White House spokesman, Ari Fleischer, said Iraq was still refusing to co-operate actively with United Nations inspectors and it was a known fact that there were weapons in Iraq.

His comments came after the chief UN weapons inspector, Hans Blix, briefed the Security Council on the weapons declaration provided by Iraq last month and the progress of inspections so far.

facts? we dont need no stinkin facts ;)

Ok, so it isn't WMD, but we all knew they wouldn't find a smoking gun in a month.

The point is that Iraq has shown once again they have no intention of complying with the UN resolutions. If they are not complying with this one, they are not complying with any of them.

And I assume that you'll be the first trooper on the ground over there?
