Blind student required to pass drivers ed....

according to the story, it's just the written rules test, not the actual driving that they have to pass; and, the parents DO have the option to request an exemption.

It isn't like they are required to drive to pass. All they have to know is the rules of the road. And even blind people can benefit by knowing when it is legal/illegal for them to cross the road. They can benefit by knowing when cars have the right of way. I say, stop whining.

This is stupid, but not as outrageous as it actually sounds. She only has to pass a written rules test. I suppose knowing how traffic works could be useful for people that don't drive...although it doesn't really sound necessary.

Why the hell is driver's ed a graduation requirement, anyway? What fvkcing moron decided that was a required part of a standard high school education?

Cars NEVER have the right of way over pedestrians. That's probably all they need to learn.
Either way, if you've ever taken the drivers test, you'll know that 95% of the stuff on the test won't pertain to a pedestrian that doesn't drive - how to park on a hill, how to brake in the rain if you don't have abs, stopping distance, etc..
It's beyond silly to have a blind person be required to learn it.
Oh yeah, but then again, it's cool to accuse someone of whining here, because it makes you seem morally superior.

I should hope so. Isn't everybody required to pass?
that's right. what their argument is, is that a driving class won't be useful to them since they won't use it.

well, ******, i wasn't planning on being any physicist or chemist or a whole slew of other things, maybe i should have bitched about having to take those classes.

Overblown story

Now if they had prevented a kid from getting their diploma and then said they had to take it to graduate, that would be a story. This is what happens when they cannot find real news to report on...

That's a ridiculous argument.
You don't have to take physics/chemistry. You can take the general science courses so that you have general knowledge about the physical world that you live in.
Yes a driving class won't be useful for them. Even the damn schoolboard says it defies logic to require a blind person to pass drivers ed, and yet you're here arguing against logic.

The same could be said of any class in high school. No one is asking her to do something that she doesn't already have to do (memorize facts for class) Her reason for not wanting to take the test is that she believes it takes time away from her other studies, well guess what, it takes time away from other students as well. She needs to suck it up and stop acting so entitled to handouts.

Wrong. Did you know that it is illegal to walk along an interstate? I agree it is stupid to require it for graduation, but your argument has no legs at all. She isn't being asked to do anything that her disability prohibits her from doing. In fact, she is using her disability to be treated differently in an area where she can and should be treated the same.
