Blew my HT speakers...

Well, heard the story about my dog ate my homework? My dog blew my home theater speakers. She layed on the remote, and somehow turned it up to -9 on my pioneer reciever, and literally trashed my sheet. So, I need suggestions as to what to do. Should I go floorstanding? Or should I just get a basic ht setup again? If I should go floorstanding, throw out a few places to pick this stuff up cheaper than ghetto buy or short circuit city.

What's your budget?

What did you have before? Were you happy with it and just want a replacement set that works, or do you really want something better?
 
That should not have happened.

Physically inspect the speakers and crossovers of the speakers. Physically inspect your receiver...yes, pop it open. Use your nose/eyes to find blown components. There is a disctint smell.

Blown speaker components can be easily replaced. Fried output transistors on your amp cannot. On the other hand if you've trained your dog to damage home theater equipment as an excuse to upgrade....well then you are a master.:thumbsup:

 
Well, I only was running a 4.1 at the time due to moving my equipment downstairs. I have hooked up an extra satellite to each one and the channels for those are fine. How do i find out about the sub?

In order to help we need a whole TON of information.

1) Have you read the manual for your reciever?
2) Are all you speaker wires secured to the outputs of your receiver and your speakers?
3) Are you familiar with selecting the audio and video inputs of your receiver? If not then go to point 1.
4) Describe in detail EXACTLY how your speakers are connected. with painstakingly detail. I'm talking detailing each and every single speaker, positive and negative, what, when, where, why, how.

This is the only way I personally can help.
 
-9 killed your speaker? I can go to 00 and not kill my speakers while playing Telarc 1812. I had to cover my ears but it was still nauseating.

Try the pink noise test on all your speakers. If they make sound and don't flutter, you are fine.

Budget, size of room, orientation of setup and which receiver all impact choice of speakers. Post that info.

Not all volume levels for receivers are the same, and I would think that the receiver producing a clipped signal might have been what did in the speakers depending on what the actual damage is (still kind of unsure by the description)

I think it sounds like he has one spare speaker that's working while the four that were hooked up are toast when connected to the output that works with the spare speaker.

How do you find out about the sub? Well... does it work when you try to use it? 😛

Something you might try on your busted speakers are to ever so lightly push on them and see if they make a crackling noise. (Don't touch the tweeters if those are fvcked up though)

Properly calibrated, 00 is supposed to be universal. I don't think the amp clipped, given the load is kindda small.

Time for new speakers 🙂
 
according to my wife, it was loud as hell and distorted. I checked all of the wires around the room and the deck is fine. the sub, doesnt sound like sh1t. neither does the 1 speaker that wasnt hooked up obviously. If i move that one speaker around the room at different places, it is the only one that isnt shot. so, i am in the market for not only floor standing speakers, but also the rear speakers.
 
Did you mention a budget yet?

Do you need to have floorstanders up front? You'll tend to get better quality bookshelf speakers on a budget than floorstanders.

The most important speakers are going to be the front three. If you're going to skimp somewhere, the surround speakers are going to be where to do that (unless you listen to a lot of multichannel music and need the surrounds to match).

So new speakers all around. Budget is still outstanding... What kind of music do you listen to?
 
Its really not for music. Its for xbox360, along with playing dvds through that, and cable tv. So, movies, and games. I guess I could listen to music on it, but i dont even use it for that. Plus, my cd collection is upstairs. I am currently working on networking my xbox with my home pc, with all of my music on it. Then just downloading it to the x when i want to. I got some nice shizzle, just too lazy to hook it all up 8).

As for the speakers, as for now, i think i am going to do like what yoyo said, just get some book shelf speakers, and run them. Im just gonna have to probably get new stands for them since they are so big. Either that, or i will get some wall mount speakers and put them in the ceiling which has a great pitch on it to play around the room.

Kinda stuck between many things. Either way, im gonna miss my yamahas. They were great.
 
So get a cheap ass ht speaker package and hook them up. Realistically speaking, when it comes to the lower end of the speakers range, brand doesn't matter. I picked up a ht speaker set from ratshack for C$100 when it was on sale (for my in-laws). I was genuinely surprised that they don't sound too bad. Based on 4" mid and 1" tweeter (mains have 2x4", 1x1" and 1x6.5" woofer). Great value.
