Blemishes on my monitor

I have had a SyncMaster 955DF for nearly a year now and have been very happy with it. Today however I have noticed two minor problems with it:

1. Near the middle of the screen I see 4 tiny little marks on the glass. I tried using an alcohol swab to see if I could remove them, and no luck. I now think that these marks may be scratches, as opposed to gunk on the screen. Also know that this is actually on the glass, and not inside the glass on the tube.

2. On the black border around the actual screen picture there is a little black hole, maybe 4 pixels big, that reveals the picture underneath it. If this is the case, I was wondering what the purpose of the black border is, because all it does is cover up usable space of the monitor.

My dell mon has a hole in the black border too. I think the border is so if you make the screen wider thn your glass, it doesn't hit the plastic part or sumthin. No idea 😉

Oh yeah, what do you guys recommend as a monitor cleaner? I noticed a lot of finger prints and dust when I shined light on the glass.

I'll give some theories, but no real answers! 😉

1. Does the Sync have an anti-glare coating? It could be this coating that is damaged.

2. I've heard that more distortion occurs at the edges of monitors. The border could be the best attempt to hide these distortion prone areas.

Don't use any type of cleaning agent on the monitor because I've been told that it is possible to wear down the anti reflective coating. Just use something that is very soft like a cotton cloth that has bee slightly dampened with water.

I think it might be anti-glare coating worn away because the marks are much brighter than the rest of the screen.

I use some premoistened screen cleaning wipes (alcool free) on my trinitron, no way to clean it with only water and cloth. The wipes are great, keep dust away😉

Cheap PIL screens commonly have the coating removed for a few pixels at the exact middle of all 4 sides, it speeds up the CRT alignment process when a + is on the screen, to get accurate rotation of the deflection yoke on the back of the tube.

Again, I re-iterate, it is common on cheap, low quality monitors, and is common on most televisions, low and high quality, excluding trinitrons.

As to the scratches on the surface, if it doesn't have the UV anti-glare coating on it then you can try a trick commonly used to remove scratches in watch glass, get a tiny bit of white toothpaste and rub it into that spot, see if it works.

I just use windex on my monitor and it works great to get rid of all those finger prints and smears. I havent had a problem with it yet...

Tried the toothpaste on some old 14&quot; monitors at work today after I put them face down on the concrete and pushed them around a few meters... the toothpaste treatment eliminated the tiny scratches but the deeper ones it merely made more visible.
