So there I was, online and happy. I decided to rest my eyes for a bit and sat down on my bed. I turn to look at the monitor a few minutes later and see that I had lost my connection. Thinking it strange I tried the standard variety of tests: pinged my gateway, checked IP/gateway/DNS settings, checked the cable, and tried a different ethernet drop in my room (dorm). None worked.
At this point I contacted my gf and asked if other ppl in my dorm were online. They were :| crap...that means its something on my end. I then decide to try 1) switching to DHCP and 2) Reinstalling the drivers to my ethernet controller (the nvidia nforce gigabit controller standard on the msi k8n neo2). Changing any setting in the network settings panel resulted in freezing and a hard reset. Trying to reinstall the drivers also resulted in freezing and a hard reset. Troubled by this, I gave up on it and switched to the second realtek controller. After a couple freezes while trying to disable the nvidia controller and enable the realtek one, I am finally online again. What do people think, driver problem? Is the nvidia controller fried and its RMA time? Do the freezes during driver reinstallation/network settings changes indicate more than just a controller problem?
