I just placed an order at amazon for $14 for a set of pliers, folding utility knife, and a magnetic 9" level.
On the checkout page (just before you click place order) right above where you choose shipping it told me that I had been selected for a 3 month trial of amazon prime and to click on a button there to activate it!!

Amazon prime is HAWT!

Info on how to find out if you are eligable for the free trial and how to sign up:

Thanks to weepul for finding a really easy way to see if you have the free trial
Login to amazon and goto this page and see if it says its free:

http://www.amazon.com/prime
WARNING! Do not click the signup button if it says its $79. You will get charged instantly. If it says free trial, you are all set.

Another way to find out:
Looks like they are offering it just as you are about to checkout, so add an item to your cart and go through the checkout pages all the way up until you choose the shipping (just before you hit the PLACE ORDER button). See if they offer you a free trial as well.

A 3rd way: You can also check on my account under manage subscriptions, and clicking on amazon prime. Previous similar deals have sometimes shown the free offer there, but be careful! If it says click here to subscribe to amazon prime for $79, its not free. Click there and you will instantly get charged. Only if it says free is it free.

Details about amazon prime and what is covered

* Free Two-Day Shipping on more than one million in-stock items sold by Amazon.com.

* Upgrades to One-Day (Overnight) Shipping for just $3.99 per item.

* Free Standard Shipping for eligible items shipped to P.O. boxes in the continental United States

* No minimum purchases required.

As an Amazon Prime Free Trial member, you're welcome to invite up to four
household members to share your subscription.
Which addresses can I ship to using Amazon Prime?

Members can ship eligible items to any valid address in the continental United States as long as it meets the restrictions outlined in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions. Members are not limited to shipping eligible purchases exclusively to their home billing address.

It works on more than just movies and books. I've ordered outdoor tools (including a set of pliers and a level) with it and it applied.

Looks like it applies to amazon.com items only (not 3rd parties). On the item page check the upper right just above the add to cart button. If it says amazon.com its amazon item. If it says anything else, like J&R or whatever, prime does not apply.

It also appears that anything that would normally have an extra shipping charge (like a big screen TV with a $200 shipping charge) is not covered under amazon prime. If an amazon item has an extra shipping charge, it says so at the top of the page.

More details here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/13819211

Info on make sure you aren't charged at the end of 3 months:
As a side note, amazon is great about having the membership not renew for $80 after 3 months. Just goto MY ACCOUNT, and pick "Manage your Amazon Prime membership" under "Subscriptions Management". Then just click on the button to not renew/upgrade after 3 months. As simple as that, they wont charge you to renew it and you dont have to worry about canceling it as the day approaches. No hassle.
It will then say something like this:
"Your trial membership will not upgrade to a full membership automatically on April 28, 2006"

Its possible the 4 month trials people got from back then are close to running out as well. They might want another opportunity :) I wonder if amazon gives additional free trials if you'd had one already.

Also, that person didn't give any details in his OP (he just linked to SD). If that person updates his OP with details of this deal and updates his subject with this current new deal information, I'll request my thread be locked.

It came up for me while I was buying textbooks for school. Free two-day shipping to get them here sooner was sweet.

The trial is great, I order alot from amazon. Dunno about it once its over though. Most of the stuff I get from them is also free shipping and not time critical.

there's no need to add something to card to checkout to see if you qualify for the trial. I just went to:
http://www.amazon.com/prime

and on the left in big bold words, it stated:

READY TO JOIN?

Sign up for your
3-month free trial
After 3 months, your trial membership will be automatically upgraded to a 12-month membership for $79 (12 months in addition to the 3 free months). You will have the opportunity to opt out of the automatic upgrade before the trial ends.
We'll ask for your credit card information after you click below. But we will not charge your card until the end of the 3 months when your trial membership is upgraded to a 12-month membership (assuming you haven't opted out).
By clicking the button below, you acknowledge that you have read and agreed to the Terms and Conditions.

I'm about at the end of my trial. If it was $39.99, I would actually consider it. $79 is too much for me :(

What sized items are usually excluded from the Prime rate? It says oversized or overweight, and a vacuum cleaner for example is neither really. Is this mainly for books and movies? Is there a reduced shipping rate for items that don't have the regular prime discount?

I think the ones that have an extra shipping charge are excluded. Like a 30" HDTV screen might have an extra $100 shipping normally.

Its not just books and movies, I just ordered some outdoor tools with it.

If you give me some links of some items you have questions on I can check it out.
Here's an example:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009EXWL6
A $2300 HDTV, Adds $199 to shipping costs. (notice that it states this charge on the page up at top. Amazon prime does not apply.
From what I can tell, any amazon products that don't normally add an additional shipping price are elegible.

Also note that at the top right above the add to cart button it says AMAZON.COM
Amazon prime doesn't work with items from 3rd party vendors. You can tell if its 3rd party if it lists anything other than amazon.com in that spot.

I'm about a month through my 3-month trial, and I love it. I've ordered quite a bit more stuff through Amazon with the $3.99 overnight shipping now, although I seriously doubt I'll even consider paying $79 for another year's worth. Not sure if I'd order enough to make it worth the while. Plus, anything I buy never has to be here the next day, I just usually like it to be :).

Part of the trouble is that prime doesnt work for the 3rd party vendors that sell through amazon (Or at least not AFAIK) And the 3rd parties are often the cheapest. By a lot. I have the amazon CC though, so combo this with the certificates I get from that equals some good deals.

The official FAQ on Amazon Prime says the free shipping under the plan normally applies only to those items that would otherwise qualify for Super Saver shipping. That means no heavyweight items (figure 15 to 20 pounds or more) will qualify.

Thus, you'll save actual money only if you weren't going to exceed the $25-dollar threshold for Super Saver shipping with your order.

Well plus the free 2nd day air shipping. The normal free shipping could take up to 2 weeks (although I usually get the normal free shipping within 5 or so business days).
And the $3 overnight option. So you can order it and have it the next day :)

The free 2 day shipping has been fantastic for me. I love not having to wait for super saver to decide that they'll deliver.

Sweet, I waited until after a semester started to order school books. Then instead of panicking and buying them from the college bookstore, I was able to order them free 2nd day air :) I love saving money :)

Thanks much for this (though it's an R, but shhh! ;) ) as my sis and I use Amazon religiously, her for her textbooks, and myself for the music that I can't find to DL :D
