I just placed an order at amazon for $14 for a set of pliers, folding utility knife, and a magnetic 9" level.
On the checkout page (just before you click place order) right above where you choose shipping it told me that I had been selected for a 3 month trial of amazon prime and to click on a button there to activate it!!
Amazon prime is HAWT!
Info on how to find out if you are eligable for the free trial and how to sign up:
Thanks to weepul for finding a really easy way to see if you have the free trial
Login to amazon and goto this page and see if it says its free:
http://www.amazon.com/prime
WARNING! Do not click the signup button if it says its $79. You will get charged instantly. If it says free trial, you are all set.
Another way to find out:
Looks like they are offering it just as you are about to checkout, so add an item to your cart and go through the checkout pages all the way up until you choose the shipping (just before you hit the PLACE ORDER button). See if they offer you a free trial as well.
A 3rd way: You can also check on my account under manage subscriptions, and clicking on amazon prime. Previous similar deals have sometimes shown the free offer there, but be careful! If it says click here to subscribe to amazon prime for $79, its not free. Click there and you will instantly get charged. Only if it says free is it free.
Details about amazon prime and what is covered
It works on more than just movies and books. I've ordered outdoor tools (including a set of pliers and a level) with it and it applied.
Looks like it applies to amazon.com items only (not 3rd parties). On the item page check the upper right just above the add to cart button. If it says amazon.com its amazon item. If it says anything else, like J&R or whatever, prime does not apply.
It also appears that anything that would normally have an extra shipping charge (like a big screen TV with a $200 shipping charge) is not covered under amazon prime. If an amazon item has an extra shipping charge, it says so at the top of the page.

Info on make sure you aren't charged at the end of 3 months:
As a side note, amazon is great about having the membership not renew for $80 after 3 months. Just goto MY ACCOUNT, and pick "Manage your Amazon Prime membership" under "Subscriptions Management". Then just click on the button to not renew/upgrade after 3 months. As simple as that, they wont charge you to renew it and you dont have to worry about canceling it as the day approaches. No hassle.
It will then say something like this:
"Your trial membership will not upgrade to a full membership automatically on April 28, 2006"
