Blast from the past ... S939 Cooler advice?

essential

Senior member
I'm holding out for a Ivy Bridge system, but in the meantime I put a little money into an upgrade on my current s939 machine. I had an Athlon 64 3500+ and I was able to buy a Athlon FX-60 on craigslist for $30, and thought it was well worth it considering they still go for over $100 on eBay.

I tossed the FX-60 in today, and everything is running well, except it's idling 10 degrees higher than the 3500+.

I'm idling 46-50 degrees with a Thermaltake Silent 939 K8 CL-P0200 and Arctic Silver 5. I'm looking for a tool-less installation CPU cooler (like just snaps into the motherboard) that will be better than the Thermaltake (I don't want to remove the motherboard or take the entire machine apart to install a cooler).

I've done plenty of research prior to posting, but most posts are like 5 years old, on average. From the reading my best option seems to be the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm Ceramic CPU Cooler. It seems to be the most recommended of the tool-less.

That still my best option?

Thanks.

Yes, AC freezer 64 pro is great for that CPU. I have one that started on my 3700+ and is still going strong on the Phenom X2 550. They still being made though?

On Google shopper they still show on some sites i've never heard, I'll toss and order in and cross my fingers.

i bought that heatsink for 16 dollars maybe 5 years ago for a 939 3700,then i used it on an am2+ build and i'm still using it today on a x4 955

Ordered one. Looking at some pics it looks like it comes with thermal applied. Leave that on or clean and apply my own? That thermal might be as old as 8 or 9 years old.

I thought a lot of current HSFs are still backward compatible with S939, for instance the Xigmatek HDT-S963 or HDT-S1283V.

This is true as far as I know. I have been using a Corsair A50 on a S939 setup, which is pretty darn new. Set me back all of $10 @ Tigerdirect.

It all worked. Installed it last night (and switched my entire computer into a Antec Super Lanboy I've had a while and never used).

I'm now idleing in the mid 30s, and 50 on load (I was idleing in the 50s) so it's quite a difference.

Thanks to all who replied.

Heh, I also upgraded from a 3500+ to an FX-60 (about 5 years ago mind you, it still hurts to think about that price I paid 😉 But that's not my point. I'm still running that FX-60 today and I gotta say I'm amazed that it is still keeping me in the game. Hell, framerates have not been stellar lately but at least marginal. I bet you'll be surprised what you get out of it until Ivy bridge.

I'm actually on here researching for a couple more days before pulling the trigger on a 2600k build but I gotta say, it feels like I'm gonna lose a trusted friend when I retire my trusty 'ol FX-60.

Long as we're on the subject of FX chips, I just dug up this post I entered into an FX-55 competition (written when AMD was still king of the hill mind you...)

So do you like Intel Inside?

I do not like that, Sam-I-am
I do not like Intel Inside

But sure you'd like it if you tried?
I'd change your mind, I'd be your guide

I've tried it once and often cried
And soon enough...I wished I'd died
Now here is what I must confide:
I THINK INTEL SHOULD STEP ASIDE!

But would you could you lose that pride?
And give your chip another ride?

Why, even if I would abide
My RMA has been denied
The chip.....it's gone.....completely fried!
It's such a thing I can't abide

You say that like it's cut and dried
This thing about Intel decried…

…for which I won't spare half a note!
Not even for a thrifty quote
Why do you seek to twist my vote?
It's time for you to take a note…

I would not like that with a clam
Nor even with some Golden RAM
I would not like that, such a sham
I would not like it! Sam-I-am!

I would not like it in a tree
I'd turn it down if it were free
Directly shipped from QVC
It's. Just. Not. For. Me! Don’t you see?

Sam-I-am

I'll tell you now 'bout AMD
And what I’ll say, I say for free
Then when I've spoke, we WILL agree
In this you have my guarantee

They call her FX-55
You'll feel her juice when she goes live
She'll never throw you any jive
You'll never see her take a dive

It's clear to me she's quite a pick
She'll cross the line in just a click
And when she revs it’s pretty sick
MY GOD THIS CHIP IS FREAKING QUICK!

You think that I should make a flip?
Just ditch Intel to try this chip?

I tell you she can really purr
I took a spin, twas all a blur
Just hop aboard and you’ll concur
That’s all I’m hoping to infer

They’ve run this race since Socket 3
Right out the gate, a real banshee
You’ll find it hard to disagree
The King of Kings is A. M. D.

Now here’s the key but do take heed
Her interests lie in tip top speed
It’s what you crave that she will feed
Now rev her up, fulfill your need

Sam-I-am.

hehe, glad I didn't try to rhyme that with 60......may not have worked as well, good luck with that chip man....and be sure to keep your seatbelt on ;P

I'd recommend a heatsink that you can use on your next rig. Probably any AM2/AM3 can work with 939.
