I'd like to use a Compaq IA-1 as a sort of glorified hi-res digital picture frame. While viewing images under Opera shouldn't be a problem, I have no idea as to how to mount a USB flash drive. Any tips?

assuming you have the appropriate modules loaded into the kernel, dmesg will tell you it detected the drive, assigned an identifier to it. At this point, you can mount it to the file system like any other HD.

Jailbait has a very heavily restricted command line. I'm not much good with the CLI as it is, and I haven't the foggiest idea of how to make a modified version do what I want.

well, starting at the simple end. Plug the drive in and hit dmesg. it looks like jailbait has dmesg available. at the very end, you should see some blurb about USB and whatnot. In there, there's a drive point assigned. It will start with "sd" or "hd" usually.
