the cafeteria had a "cook-out" theme today. Hot dogs and hamburgers from outside grills. They have brats, too. And they look to be of a generous size and look good.

So I get one with fries and then I ask, hey, where's the fixings for the brat? The guy points to the ketchup and mustard. That is all. I see one of the managers and ask where the kraut, spicy mustard, relish and all the good stuff that is supposed to go with a braut. Even onions?

They never heard or thought of putting these things out. All they know is ketchup and mustard. And relish is the little packets at the register. I know the South has it's own way of doing things, but people there are great foods out there besides grits and BBQ!

I grew up near Cincinnatti, Ohio. I could walk up to a street vendor and ask for a braut or smokey and "drag it through the garden." They knew what I meant.


I'm not mad, just disappointed. The brauts are actually very, very good. I went back for another and found the same manager. I complimented them on their meat. She said they got them from a place in Wisconsin. Adn that she talked with another manager who agreed with me, while she had always herself had eaten hot dogs with just ketchup and mustard. And that's the point - there is a big difference between a braut and a dog. Maybe next time they'll have the extras.

I find, that in general, the food in the South sucks... They're great at bbq, and a few other foods, but those are few and far between. I have yet to find a place that makes good pizza south of Pennsylvania... Wow, I could really go into a rant about southern food right now, but I'll sum it up with this.... people who call Pepsi, "coke" : morons.
 
I can beat that one.

My college cafeteria had a German theme and served "Wienerschnitzel" one night.

They wanted to put brown gravy on it. :Q

Those darn Texans must think everything is a chicken fried steak. 🙁

On the upside, when I expressed horror and asked for a lemon wedge, the kid did go back to the fridge and get a lemon and slice it up for me.

I live in Chicago and am spoiled by the junk food here.
Portillo's a local hot dog stand has a Maxwell Street Polish, A polish sausage on a steamed bun with grilled onions and mustard, Yum.
They also have a Combo, which is an Italian beef with hot peppers and juice, over top of an Italian sausage on a 7-inch roll. Optionally it comes with Mozzarella on top if you want your heart attack immediately.

Don't even talk to me about Pizza and Italian food. Mangia.

edit: werk, you gotta admit that while food in New Orleans is great (ever heard of a guy named Emeril? Or Paul Prudhomme?) its not really representative of the South. Cajun food > Southern food.

Heh, that's funny. I live within walking distance of a Maxwell Street and Portillos. Maxwell Street is excellent at 3am when no place else is open. Do you live in Bridgeport, by any chance?

There was a place in North Carolina called "Pizza By Design" that rocked.

Went to a place in High Point, NC called Tijuana Pete's (or something similar) and ordered fajitas. The rice had teriyaki sauce! WTFungus? heh

Florida is different, and has great food (especially if you're a Cuban food fan like me).

I'm not insulting the South at all. I lived in the "border state" of Kentucky. (How dare you call me, "Yankee," you inbred cracker cousin!) I had the best of both. German sausages and beer from Cincy and BBQ, bourbon, and babes in KY. I think it is funny in this day and age that someone confuses a brautwurst for a hotdog, especially in the food service industry. They get hit by the PC police to offer up ethnic food. So I just thought...

And I guess the most humorous aspect of all of this - most cooks/chefs in North Carolina are Ecuardorian or Meztiso Indians. (I appologize for horrible spelling here.) At James Joyce, the best Irish pub and restaurant in NC employs chef Carlos "O'Brian" for southern Ireland.
