I went to Target this morning to buy a medium-sized package envelope and some bubble wrap. That is all I bought. The cashier looks at my items and then asks "Are you mailing a package to someone?"

A) i never said I didnt reply... It caught me off-guard on how dumb the question was, but I wasnt rude. I said "Yes, I am mailing a gift to my cousin before he goes off to war" (This is true)
B) this wasnt like a teeny-bopper girl this is more of an Im-a-member-of-AARP girl

Actually I think it was a nice gesture on her part. I always appreciate it when someone tries to reach out on a personal level when you are doing business with them, even if it is just a cashier.

Now I can understand being caught off guard because in todays society (especially in the lager cities) people just go about their business like drones barely acknowledging the presence of others.

Actually I think it was a nice gesture on her part. I always appreciate it when someone tries to reach out on a personal level when you are doing business with them, even if it is just a cashier.

Now I can understand being caught off guard because in todays society (especially in the lager cities) people just go about their business like drones barely acknowledging the presence of others.

I have no problem making small chat. Just when I pick up an envelope and bubble-wrap, its not like im gonna use it for toilet paper. It was just a dumb starting question that I thought was amusing.

Not really. If you would have given her a blank stare instead of being cordial yourself then you would have been an asshole. The fact that you did respond in a friendly manner means that you understood what she was doing and didn't go out of your way to make her uncomfortable even though she did catch you off guard.
