Blank screen and blinking cursor loading 98SE

I think this is one of my worst problems ever. I installed 98se on a machine with a video, sound, tv, and firewire card. I also had a 40gig hd, Ls120 and a dvd drive. It worked fine so I work with it for a little bit. Then I add an ide zip drive, cdrw, and another hard drive to the mix and now I can't get window to load to the desktop. It gets to the startup screen then it blanks out and theres just a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen. I can go into safe mode but when when I restart in does the same thing again. Right now I have a Gigabyte 7rxvp-raid but this has also happened to me with an ECS and Super socket 7 board. Even when I unplug some of the drives it still wont get to the desktop anymore. I tried a reinstall and it wouldn't finish that either. Is it a problem with 98?? I got 6 ide devices on another computer with XP pro and it boots everytime. PLEASE HELP!!! 🙂

Did you use the same memory on both boards? Your problem sounds exactly like my recent problem. I had one bad memory module. I could play in dos all day, but if I tried to get into win98se, 2k, or knoppix the computer would either hard lock or reboot itself.

You might want to go to www.memtest86.com and download memtest86 ver3.0. It makes a bootable floppy that ran on my system that wouldn't even go to windows.

A couple of years ago I had the same problem with a bad MSI board, but you said that it happened with both boards so I would check out the mem first.

Hope that helps.
