What's a game that you've played that falls under the title? Right now, I can say that Scene It? could have been fantastic if it weren't for the utter lack of DLC.

I love trivia games (if you haven't guessed by the 1 vs 100 thread) and I want to like Scene It? but I haven't been able to bring myself to buy the second edition of Scene It (Box Office Smash) because of the lack of DLC. It was released back in October but there's been only one piddly DLC pack released for it. This amazes me given the how many different editions of Scene It that exists not only on store shelves but on as downloadable games for cell phones!

- Dead Rising could have been fantastic if it weren't for the timer.
- Crackdown could have been fantastic if it weren't for the lack of a superhuman enemy.
- Mario Galaxy/Zelda could have been fantastic if they weren't on the Wii.
- Madden could have been fantastic if it weren't for the exclusive NFL license.

Max Payne (1) would have been much better if it weren't for that stupid dream sequence maze. Still a great game, but that level really dragged it down.

Resident Evil could have been a good game if not for the controls and camera angles. At least RE4 fixed the camera, though the controls were still poor.

Mass Effect could have been much better with a better inventory system and a bit more variety on non-quest planets.

Call of Duty 4 and 5 were already great IMO, but they could have been better with split-screen online play (i.e. 2-4 people per console online, like with Halo 3).

Fallout 3 would have been a lot better if they hadn't fucked up the ending so badly.

I had to give up on the game because of that. I don't get how mazes are considered "fun"

Most games could be better if they didn't force you to constantly pick shit up. Examples: Bioshock, Fallout 3. Mass Effect has the right idea where you basically just autoloot everything.

And what's the deal with an inventory limit? You mean I can only carry a rocket launcher, machine gun, a mini nuke launcher, a flame thrower, a minigun, a rifle, 30 grenades 500 first aid kits, 700 rations of food, 1000000 in currency, in addition to what I'm already wearing... BUT ANYTHING MORE THAN THAT WOULD JUST BE RIDICULOUS AND UNREALISTIC.

You'd be in real trouble once you hit 2147483648 of anything... or possibly 32768.

Yes the inventory is what is pissing me off with Fallout 3 right now. After every trip i make searching through a new area i have to head back to megaton to my house and drop all my shit off down to the bare minimum so i can pick up more crap at the next location. Really annoying.
Also I hated it in oblivion too, having to walk up and look at every single locker/box/etc for something to be in it.

Fallout 3 could have been fantastic if it weren't for Black Isle disappearing.
Master of Orion 3 could have been fantastic if it weren't for Microprose disappearing.
Spore could have been fantastic if it weren't for Will Wright being a whore.

GTAIV would have been legendary if it had local coop.

In fact, the PS3 would be everything I want and more if it had local multiplayer, or even local networking a la System Link. Almost all my friends have PS3s, 1 has a 360.

Final Fantasy X - those incredibly irritating puzzles!

Fallout 3 - crashing
Fallout 3 - the ending

Those immediately come to mind

-The force unleashed would have been fantastic if it weren't for the horrible controls and freezing.
-Fallout 3 if it wasn't so tedious

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would have been fantastic if it weren't for the crazy supernatural crap toward the end.

Just FYI, all of the crashing for me of Fallout 3 (on 360) went away after I installed to hard drive.

-Assassins Creed would have been great if the side missions were actually fun. Here's hoping for a solid sequel.

-Prince of Persia (newest one) would have been great if the combat was more like the previous games.

I've been looking to get this game. What kind of crazy supernatural stuff are we talking about or is that a spoiler?

I don't think it gives away anything significant to say that your enemies later in the game are... "modified" humans. I forget what exactly they were, but they were sort of fast-moving zombies. I wouldn't let that stop you from playing the game, because it really was an enjoyable game. I usually recommend renting it though, unless you're the type who plays single-player games over and over. It has no multiplayer, and it's not terribly long. I forget how many hours it took me, but I finished it in under a week.

Many of the games mentioned in this thread ARE fantastic games that just could have been better

Yeah, I started it late on Saturday, and finished on Sunday, but it really was good.

Gears 2 would have been fantastic if it weren't for Cliffy B, Joe Graf and the rest of the Epic bunch completely failing at its design.

One of the most glitch filled fps games around today? check
Worst matchmaking and host selection ever? check
Pathetically slow updates that break as much or more than they fix? check
Easily manipulated connections because Epic/Microsoft are too cheap to use dedicated servers and epic is unable or willing to do anything about it? check
Epic ass lickers claiming it's the most amazing bug/lag/whatever free piece of software in the history of the universe? check

weeeeeeee
