I had an Asus board that would slowly kill hard drives plugged in as the slave on the primary IDE channel. I didn't figure that one out right away, since the drives it took out were a Deathstar and its refurb replacement. That sucked.
It's not the media. It's the crappily built drive you're using.
Even if the media was bad and made the drive spin up fast (happens to me fairly often), the drive should be of enough high quality to deal with such scenarios......and last you for YEARS (until you upgrade your machine).
Since Sony seems to be the culprit in your case (twice), get a different brand that's highly reviewed.
