"B-1B achieves first supersonic flight using synthetic fuel
Written on March 22, 2008 ? 9:08 am | by FIDSNS |

A B-1B Lancer from the 9th Bomb Squadron here became the first US Air Force aircraft to fly at supersonic speed using an alternate fuel March 19 in a flight over Texas and New Mexico. The fuel, a 50/50 blend of synthetic and petroleum gases, is being tested as part of an ongoing US Air Force program to help the environment and to use a fuel produced domestically. "

They are using your natural gas supply to run their planes. Hardly an alternative fuel supply considering its using a fuel that normally would get consumed by the civilian-side consumers. The USAF should be ashamed for calling this an "alternative fuel" program. Its just another way the government is screwing the pooch for the American public.

they once powered a plane with a nuclear reactor, we should all have one of those in our cars too.

Screw alternative energy for the military. I want our planes to be using time tested good old fuel in place of the new stuff when flying around in the defense of our nation and not have to test new fuels and engines to reach goals that we've reached in the past several decades

The military uses up thousands of gallons of fuel a day in normal operations, and releases lots of stuff into the air from bullets, explosives, and debris. Keep environmentalists out of the military.

It could be that the military is taking into account the possibility of being denied access to 'foreign' oil. There is also a program to convert coal - very inefficient but it works.

Yeah, but the technology is all fully understood, the Nazis used it in WWII to produce synthetic oil once they were cut off from their oil supplies. So, there is no technological hurddle here, it is all just PR. Also, we already have the strategic petroleum reserve which would last out military quite a long time not to mention that our biggest supplier of oil (Canada) is right on our border, and we could go to Alaska and the Gulf to get more oil, along with these techniques of course. There is absolutely no feasible situation where our military will ever run out of oil anytime soon. IF you are willing to spend enough money you can get oil or make oil enough for all our military would need. Not to mention we can just invade other countries and take their oil too.

This is all jsut BS basically.

That actually sounds pretty cool. Link on that nuclear-powered plane?

As for nuclear-powered cars, I'd like a Ford Nucleon.

I have only heard of nuclear powered missiles and drones

here is a bit of info about the program that was canceled

It's an "alternative fuel" because it's not typical jet fuel. Traditional jet fuels are full of aromatic goodness, resulting in lots of environmentally malignant exhaust species. Removal of the aromatics cleans up the exhaust considerably, though adds difficulty in a number of other areas (synthesis, elastomer swelling, heat transfer, and more). Bottom line: environmental laws are forcing the USAF to seek non-aromatic fuels however they can get them. As with all regulations, it hurts the bottom line of those being regulated. I can prove this on an abacus. The question then, as always, is whether we are willing to suck it up and pay more in order to be more environmentally benign.

The ironing here is earth shaking. We're talking about, among other things, bombers that at the very least rearrange the environment.

Sure they may flatten a city, but the air above will be clean and nice to breath.

Wow. IRONING? It's IRONY. Why can't people here seem to figure that out? Ironing is what you do to your clothes to get the wrinkles out. I'm sorry, but this just makes me sad.

Get with the program, you can't call irony, irony, it's ironing if you are one of the cool kids.

Pointing out that ironing and irony are actually two different words hardly makes me a grammar Nazi. Using ironing when you meant irony does, however, make you an idiot.
